The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 19, 1999 - 7 IOLE ,eiitinued from Page I1 nt -sweatshop activities for the New ,r:-based Union of Needletrades, Industries,-and Textile Employees. The University code has stronger guidelines than those proposed for the Collegiate Licensing Company code. The CLC is the agent that handles con- tracts between licensed manufacturers S161 schools nationwide, including University. The University reported more than $5.7 million in revenue from licensed merchandise last year - more than any other school reporting such information. While SOLE members plan to contin- ue to occupy Bollinger's office, labor organizations and sweatshop activists around the nation are supporting the stu- dents' sit-in protest. "They are confronting the most power- university on this issue,' Coughlin I Charles Kurnaghan, director of the National Labor Committee, sent a fruit basket to the SOLE members inside Bollinger's office yesterday. Kurnaghan and the NLC exposed sweatshop labor practices in factories producing a line of products for televi- sion talk show host Kathy Lee Gifford. "The nation is looking to these stu- dents, Kurnaghan said Wednesday. About 20 students at Harvard University held a sit-down protest in front of the Science Center on Harvard Yard yesterday afternoon as an act of solidarity. They passed out leaflets "to keep people informed" of what is happening with the anti-sweatshop movement, said Dan Hennefeld, of Harvard's Progressive Students Labor Movement member. University of Wisconsin at Madison graduate student Thomas Wheatley, a member of the Madison Anti-sweatshop Coalition, said SOLE is only attempting to raise the standards already set by Wisconsin. After a similar sit-down strike, the Wisconsin administration agreed to research the living wage. "We're working to mobilize the stu- dents here at Wisconsin and around the nation to support the student at Michigan in any way possible. If that means driving to Michigan, we'll do it," Wheatley said. Gardner said a SOLE representative will address the public at a rally in front of Fleming at noon today, but the other members will remain in Bollinger's office. More than 150 students turned out for a rally supporting SOLE in front of Fleming yesterday. At yesterday's University Board of Regents meeting, Bollinger said SOLE members occupying his office will not be evicted or prosecuted. "They remind all of us how important it is to consider our impact on others in the greater community. we touch," Bollinger said. - Daily Staff Reporter Jaimie Winker contributed to this report. STADIUM Continued from Page 1 irritate the fans. That doesn't get it done for the advertisers or Oklahoma State." Goss hired Cecchini without digging deeply into his former teammates' financial history. Cecchini said his past does not mean he is not qualified to handle deals of this magnitude. "Tom had a good understanding of many areas of my background," Cecchini said. "To go into detail and tell him every detail that took place, no, I didn't do that," he said. "His investigating of who I am and what I was thorough, but to think he would know all about my financial background is ludicrous'" Goss could not be reached for com- ment yesterday. - Daily Sports Editor Josh Kleinbaum contributed to this report.
