qECTU RE
ontinued from Page 1l
saw University faculty as a barricade to
advancement of universities.
Frank Turner, a former provost ofYale
University once said that "Universities
have too much freedom" and advocated
a "call to the moneyed classes to save the
universities from their faculties."
In 1971, Louis Powell, a prominent
Virginia lawyer who would later be
ppointed to Justice of the Supreme
Court, advocated private finance by big
businesses to finance a system to influ-
ence university faculties.
Seven years later, Powell would
author the Supreme Court's decision in
University of California Regents v
Bakke, which established the constitu-
tionality of what is now known as affir-
mative action, stating the need for a
wide range of ideas and beliefs.
"In so far as students have an inter-
st in maintaining and enriching the
quality at universities, they share with
the faculty a reason to worry about all
of the pressures being brought to bear
on universities these days," Hollinger
said.
Daily Staff Reporter Nick Falzone
contributed to this report.

MSU
Continued from Page 1
"We created the Greek Coalition, where Greek leaders and
campus and community officials will discuss how to go about
dealing with current and future issues. (MSU) President (M.
Peter) McPherson has agreed to sit on the coalition," Gillespie
said.
MSU officials said they support the Greek leaders. "1 am
encouraged by the leadership of IFC and Panhel during the
moratorium. They are on track to not only change but reform,"
Vice President for MSU Relations Terry Denbow said.
The University of Michigan Greek system held a task

force forum about alcohol policies last week. About 30
fraternity and sorority members met to make suggestions
and ask questions about a new alcohol policy that is cur-
rently being drafted, said Panhel President Cindy Faulk.
"The forum was a chance for fraternity and sorority members
to voice their opinions, because only the opinions of presidents
had been heard before," IFC President Rohith Reddy said.
To become standard procedure, the system must vote the
policy into the bylaws, Reddy said. But if all of the proposals
are passed, the alcohol policy may see major changes.
"The task force met on Thursday to start discussions on the
issues brought up at the forum," Faulk said. "We hope to have
a finalized policy by the end of March."

HOLOCAUST
Continued from Page 1.
Jewish community to learn about our
history and look towards the future to
prevent atrocities like the Holocaust
from ever happening again." she added.
"It is our duty to inform others"
Alcpff said that as a Jewish woman
and the granddaughter of two Holocaust
survivors, she has a "personal invest-
ment" in the conference's goals, but she
encourages everyone to attend because
the conference will "convey the emotions
and ramifications of the Holocaust."
Hecker said in past years, the confer-
ence has drawn people from across the
state - including University students,

Ann Arbor residents and Michigan res-
idents - because it is "specifically
designed to be a way to reach out."
The conference will kick-off tomor-
row at noon on the Diag with a 24-hour
reading of names of people who died in
the Holocaust. At noon on Thursday, fol-
lowing the reading of thousands of
names, a memorial service is scheduled.
LSA junior Geoffrey Dworkin said the
name reading shows a dedication to com-
memorate each person and the fact that
"they're individuals, not just numbers."
Hank Greenspan, a psychologist and
playwright who teaches in the Residential
College, said not only were individuals
destroyed in the Holocaust - a whole
way of life and culture were lost.

"Can we even begin to mourn ... how
do we deal with loss on that level?" he
asked.
Although Greenspan said there is no
simple definition of the Holocaust, it
"was the deliberate and systematic mur-
der of 6 million European Jews, as well
as members of other groups who were
picked out as victims" - including
gypsies, Russian prisoners of war and
"those whom the Nazis deemed
'unworthy of life,"' like the disabled.
"We have a handful of names, and a lot
of people who are just gone," Greenspan
said. "It's not simply a question of death,
but people being erased from history,
from the earth, without graves, without
our knowing what happened."
