LOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily - Monday, March 15, 1999 - 7A ~REEKS A4tinued from Page 1A '-i!'pate in the blood drive and attend the Iducational Forum. Fette added that she wants the community to know that not all of the events during Greek Week are strictly for ,dreek system members. But although the Greek system will focus on community service throughout the week, they also plan to have a little fun. *The Mr. Greek Week contest - a competi- tion involving representatives from various campus fraternities -- will be part of the week's opening ceremonies Tuesday at the Power Center. Other scheduled events that will stress friendly competition among Greek members include Diag Day, Hill Street Day and State Street Day. Panhellenic Adviser Marybeth Seiler said the Greek society will break into 15 different teams and take part in many different compet- itive events. "Some of the events will be sumo wrestling, putt-putt golf, volleyball, a dance contest at Rick's, Greek Olympics on Palmer Field, Kereoke and Bald Bidding at Touchdown's and the Sing and Variety show," Seiler said. Seiler said Bald Bidding involves shaving heads. The week will conclude at the Sing and Variety show scheduled for March 25 in Hill Auditorium. JEOPARDY Continued from Page 1A were also able to play College Jeopardy! Online and watch wacky moments from past shows. But amidst the fun and festivities, some stu- dents had the added stress of actual tryouts. The stakes were high: a chance to be one of 15 collegians throughout the country par- ticipating in the Jeopardy! College Championship, with a grand prize of $25,000 and a Volvo convertible. The process began with hopefuls complet- ing a 10-question pre-test. Those with the highest scores moved on to another round of auditions, and another step closer to meeting host Jeopardy! Alex Trebek. More than 80 students wer'e selected to participate in each of three second st aQC competitions - during which participants completed a 50-question video test. with eight seconds to respond to each question. The pool of contestants was reduced to roughly the 10 highest-scoring students, who were given a chance to make personal impressions before two judges in a game of mock Jeopardy!. Winning students will be notified at the end of the week. If chosen in the final round, winners would travel to the Rosemont Theatre in Chicago on April 10 and 11 for the show's taping - and have a shot at mimicking the championship performance of LSA junior and previous national tournament winner C-igQBarker. For many students, the try-outs werept x ac tkywhatcthey expected. "I thought it would be harder, but once it started, everything seemed to flow," LSA sophomore Matt Pilarski said. "The adrena- line kicked in, I guess." Besides having the ability to drum up a wide range of knowledge very quickly, Public Relations head Rebecca Erbstein said the contestant search team was looking for students with a lot of energy and charisma: "It has been phenomenal. The kids have been so great," Erbstein said. "We just want to take all of them." ATTENTION! LOCAL COMPANY MUST FILL 37 IMMEDIATE OPENINGS BY MAR 18 $12.15 TO START FULL/PART TIME. FLEX. SCHED. GEO Continued from Page 1A union can complain to the University and hold them to it." While most GEO members expressed great confidence in the international GSI guarantee, Law sec- ond-year student Jodi Masley said she is worried that the University will back out of its agreement with the union. "This memorandum of understand- ing is shaky," Masley said. "I think we could go on strike and win and get the IGSIs in the contract." Rackham first-year student Jessica Curtin agreed with Masley, stating that the organization's tentative agreement with the University was not representa- tive of the union's strength. Curtin said she believes GEO could get a better contract if it went back to the bargain- ing table. But GEO President Eric Dirnbach said a strike is no longer a possibility for the union since the bargaining team signed a tentative agreement with the University. Odier-Fink added that the agreement was unanimously approved by GEO's bargaining team, bargaining committee and steward committee, a demonstration of the union's satisfac- tion of the new contract. Both GEO members and University officials said they are pleased with the new agreement. "I'm ecstatic and jubilant," GEO member Monika Cassel said. "We did- n't get everything we asked for, but it's certainly one of the strongest union contracts out there. Everyone across the board - the entire University com u- nity - is going to benefit from this' University President Lee Bollinger also said he strongly supported the on- tract, adding that he was glad to Dlave avoided a GSI strike. "I'm delighted with the contrict," Bollinger said. "A strike would hve been inconvenient for both the studinis and the faculty and highly unfortunate and unnecessary. I'm pleased this is resolved. Bollinger added that while he would have preferred GEO had not staged=a walkout, he is happy with the outcome of the contract negotiations. Both University and GEO officials said Cantor was one of the major rea- sons for the new contract's strength. Gamble said the negotiations wouldnot have ended as well as they did if Cantor had not given the University bargaining team such tremendous support. "We've very thankful for her work; she's followed the negotiations every step of the way," University Chief Negotiator Dan Gamble said. "She's been just great." Dirnbach agreed that while Cantor's position made the new contract possi- ble, he believed negotiations turned out well for GEO because the organization was able to intimidate her. "We made the provost nervous and she's the one with the power," Dirnbaeh said. "Once we got our message across to Cantor directly, we got what _We wanted."
