LOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily - Monday, February 8, 1999 - 7A 4isteria outbreak traced to meat processing plant in Western Michigan ff MEAT Continued from Page 1A of the company's products, said Theresa Herlevsen, executive -director of communication for Bil Mar's parent company Lee Corp. 'We were eventually able to determine that one of the strains found ... was identical to a strain found in one of our _'litdog packages," Herlevsen said. -The Bil Mar plant is currently closed while employees cTean and inspect the facility, Herlevsen said. w "We are hopeful that we will reopen that plant within two -eeks,"she said Friday. Last week a Detroit resident filed a lawsuit against Sara L ee claiming her daughter got listeriosis from a Bil Mar product. Sara Lee spokesperson Jeffrey Smith said he could not fiment on pending litigation. Qnce the plant reopens, Smith said, Bil Mar "will be cotmunicating very actively to consumers through ;advertising" to ensure them that the products are safe to pu'rhase. Yn Jan. 22, Thorn Apple Valley recalled millions of pounds ,of eat produced since July 6. ',The contamination was detected by testing in the -plant and has not been confirmed as the cause of any -illnesses, said Henry Hubbard, a consultant for the com- :pany. "There's no evidence that anything contaminated got shipped," Hubbard said. The products named in the recall notice originated from Thorn Apple Valley's Forrest City, Ark. plant, which has been out of commission since Dec. 30, Hubbard said. Hubbard said cleanliness problems did not contribute to the presence of listeria in the Forrest City facility. "It's a fairly new ... state-of-the-art plant," Hubbard said. "It's squeaky clean." Listeria occurs naturally in soil and water, Hubbard said, and "it's impossible to keep it out of anywhere." The recent number of recalls does not necessarily indicate more listeria present in meat products, Hubbard said. "What you're seeing is the result of more energetic screening," Hubbard said. Listeria is most likely to severely affect the elderly and young children, Hubbard said, and healthy adults may see only light symptoms. Hubbard emphasized the consumer's role in protecting themselves from possible contamination. "You must cook your hot dogs," Hubbard said. "Cook the food carefully, that's your last line of defense." The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service has planned a public meeting in Arlington, Va., on Wednesday to address concerns and possible solu- tions to the listeria outbreak. NOTRE DAME Continued from Page IA Malloy said Notre Dame and the Big Ten have always been closely associat- ed, and that he hopes those relationships can continue. "Our numerous and long-standing athletic associations with the Big Ten schools are well known to the public," Malloy said. "It was a group of University of Michigan students, you may recall, who first taught Notre Dame students to play the game of football," Malloy said. Malloy thanked the Big East for its patience, as Notre Dame will maintain its quasi-affiliation with that confer- ence. The football team will remain inde- pendent and the hockey team will remain in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Michigan hockey team also competes in the CCHA. Michigan Athletic Director Tom Goss said Notre Dame was a good fit for the Big Ten, and that it was unfortunate the board voted to end talks. With regard to Big Ten expansion, Goss said the conference should "Just to go out and add another teant just does not make sense." U- Tom Gos University Athletic Directdr proceed with caution, looking for teams that can add value to the con- ference. "If you look at Penn State, they brought value academically and athleti- cally," Goss said. "Just to go out and add another team just does not make sense." In the specific instance of football, a 12th team would add the possibility of two separate divisions and a champi- onship game at the end of the season - much like in the Southeastern and Big XII conferences. But Goss said he is not so excited about that possibility. "A lot of people are thinking 12 teams for a playoff," Goss said. "I don't necessarily support a playoff. It's an additional game - it's probably close to our finals time, so academi- cally it doesn't make sense. "Yes, there's always more revenue on the other side - but with 85 scholar- ships, you're looking at another game on top of a bowl game, you have injuries - there's just not enough peo- ple to get it done," Goss said. Goss reemphasized that no offer had officially been made for Notre Dame to join the Big Ten. But, the conference did initiate contact earlier in the acade- mic year. Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said in a statement released Friday that he doesn't regret the decision to begin preliminary talks. "Our decision to initiate contact with Notre Dame approximately seven or eight months ago, in retro- spect, was the right decision'" Delany said. "We have had imany meetings over a long period of time about the value of expansion," he said. "In the final analysis, whether the discussions are with Notre Dame or another institu- tion, it's really about believing that the institution would add significantly to the Big Ten." -Managing Sports Editor Rick Freeman contributed to this report.
