.N LOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily - Friday, February 5, 1999 - 7 RHA asks for status of Oxford Housing, building improvements RH A "The quality of Oxford Housing is Continued from Page . "I don't think any of us would below standard." want to live in a place where no - William Zeller money was put in," said Myers, an Director of University Housing LSA junior. r f Housing officials recommended the University sell Oxford in 1997 but the University Board of "Regents, though it debated the issue, never reached a consensus on the residence hall's status. Oxford resident Melanie Rausche, who presented the resolu- tion to RHA, argued that while the University continues to discuss the issue, Housing should not stop maintenance of the hall. "For a long time, Housing has been talking about selling Oxford," said Rausche, an LSA senior. "We need to have some money to go into the building as long as we're living there." Rausche said the hall's deficient laundry facilities and lack of entree plus options are particularly egre- gious problems with the quality of Oxford. Zeller said Housing will create a task-force to make a final recom- mendation as to the fate of Oxford in the coming months. He said a decision should come before fall. But RHA Rep. Nathan McCoy, an LSA junior, said Oxford residents are looking for answers to their liv- ing problems. "We're trying to accomplish two things," McCoy said. "We want an answer on the future of Oxford and we want to raise the standard of living."' FILEmPHOTO One of the University's non-traditional residence halls, Oxford Housing has not been able to reach capacity in recent years. The Resident Hall Association wants maintenance on the hal continued. GEO Continued from Page 1 it, you can't expect all of us to graduate with a .5 ointment every semester." Sylvia Orduflo, a GEO steering committee member, said the University's proposal will not really benefit GEO members. "I'm concerned that, for example, we will have to teach an extra (discussion) section," Orduijo said. She added that if the University does not want GSIs to do more work, it should specify this in GEO's con- tract. Smith said the University is not going in the right direction with its wage proposal since it did not offer GSIs a wage increase. He added that because GSIs receive the same wage increase as the faculty each year, the University should use the faculty's raise as a floor for GEO wage increas- es. GEO is currently guaranteed a 2.5 percent annual increase, 0.5 percent less than the University is obligat- ed to pay all of its other unions, Smith said. Gamble said while GEO's wage increase is less than other University unions, it is the only organization that receives the same wage as the faculty. "Even if the faculty got a 5 percent increase, all the other unions would get exactly 3 percent," Gamble said. "GEO would receive the 5 percent increase, though, because it is tied to the union." "Lo and behold, 10 months later they rose prices to raise the reserve even though we've yet to sit down and examine what was the impact. Brandon said if the Athletic Department needs addi- tional revenue, it is not being unreasonable if it raises ticket prices. "When Tom looks at his overall budget he needs to maximize the opportunities with those sports like foot- ball that generate capital and spread that capital around to the majority of sports that lose money," Brandon said. "I don't have a problem raising ticket prices to schools comparable to us. "I don't think there's a place you can go on a Saturday afternoon that puts on a better show than we do here," he said.
