The Michigan Daily - Monday, February 1, 1999 - 7A $ODE Q ?tinued from Page 1A tTM while School of Natural le burces and Environment has only one member, Hulswit said. TMe Code limits the pool of student inelists to 60, but the numbers for the faoulty pool is not fixed, Hulswit said. ,The trainees met for nine hours Ztrday with OSCR staff members in Henderson Room of the Michigan Lague. .Tihe trainees formed small groups to p ratice skills necessary for arbitration, using a simulated case, Code docu- wents and forms and police reports. Trainees also signed a confidentiality 4gMement stating that they would not jlease any information on specific arbi- tration proceedings. "That is really paramount," OSCR Resolution Coordinator Sean Esteban McCabe said. The Federal Family E ;ducation Rights and Privacy Act protects the confiden- tiality of all Code proceedings. Starting today, trainees will be prac- ticing arbitration in the Fleming Administration Building conference room where Code proceedings are held, Hulswit said. After arbitration orientation conclud- ed Saturday, trainees were given a sec- ond simulation case to study for the second series of Code training sched- uled to begin today. Role playing will be used to make the simulation as real as possible, Hulswit said. Finding a student responsible under the Code is the most important part of arbitration, lulswit said. It requires excellent questioning and decision making skills; she said. "You must in your mind and in your hearts be convinced that the event occurred and that the person is respon- sible under the Code," Hulswit said. In Code proceedings, all panelists must come to a consensus in order to find a student responsible under the Code and decide what sanctions - if any -- are appropriate. All decisions on responsibility must be made from information learned dur- ing arbitration - not from an outside source of information, Hulswit said. The training Saturday "was very focused to what is needed to be accom- plished," said LSA sophomore Eve Semins, who is training to be a student panelist. GEO Continued from Page 1A mative action policies. The issues have been at the forefront of GEO negotia- tions. While Smith is optimistic about the negotiations, he said it is extremely unlikely that GEO will extend its contract if its major issues remain unresolved after tonight's meeting. "I'm fairly hopeful and confident we're going to get this done (tonight)," Smith said. "But there would have to be incredible circumstances for us to consider signing a contract exten- sion," Smith said. Although the negotiation meeting tonight will be attended only by gradu- ate students and University administra- tors, other members of the university community plan to raise awareness about CEO's issues. Karen Miller, a Rackham student, said she and other University stu- IMPEACH Continued from Page 1A dents most of whom are under- graduate students - are rallying to support GEO. They plan to visit undergraduate classes beginning today to inform others about GEO's contract negoti- ations. "We want the undergrads to understand why GSIs are unhappy," Miller said. She and other students said they plan on making five-minute presen- tations to try and convince under- graduates to support GEO negotia- tions. have any control over when news orga- nizations go with things." The latest controversy erupted as House GOP prosecutors prepared to interview former White Ilouse intern Monica Lewinsky today in a last-ditch effort to bolster a case that appears headed for acquittal, perhaps by mid- February. Discussing the impeachment pro- ceedings in appearances yesterday talk shows, 15 senators also debated the merits of two alternatives to conviction: a censure resolution, or a more recent- ly proposed "finding of fact measure that would stipulate the facts of the case against Clinton but not remove him from office.
