Michigan 27 1 t 1 1 1 1 Penn State 0 -71T No. 1 Ohio State upset by Spartans in Columbus, 28-24 Game progression 1st Quarter _______ COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Julian Peterson forced three fumbles and Renaldo Hill intercepted top-ranked Ohio State's last gasp at the goal line with 1:12 left as four-touchdown underdog Michigan State shocked the Buckeyes, 28-24, on Saturday. The Buckeyes - with no one com- ing within 17 points all year - were not only No. 1 in both major polls the entire season, but also in the latest Bowl Championship Series rankings. The Spartans trailed 17-3 in the first quarter and fell behind 24-9 early in the third quarter when Ohio State's Damon Moore picked off a Bill Burke pass and returned it 73 yards for a touchdown. But Burke didn't make too many other mistakes, and the Spartans' defense was close to perfect. With 3:33 left, Michigan State's T.J. Turner with help from Sorie Kanu and Josh Thornhill stuffed the Buckeyes' Joe Montgomery for no gain on fourth and 1 at the Spartan 26. After forcing a punt, the Buckeyes took over again with 1:39 left, David Boston's 26-yard punt return putting them in business at their own 49. Joe Germaine, who had engineered a 20-17 upset of Arizona State in the Rose Bowl two years ago under almost identical circumstances, quickly com- pleted passes to David Boston and John Lumpkin for 16 and 20 yards. That put the ball on the Michigan State 15, but three straight incomple- tions - all with the Spartans blitzing - left the Buckeyes facing another fourth-down situation. Again the Spartans came with a full blitz, leaving flanker Dee Miller isolat- ed in single coverage on Michigan State cornerback Hill. Under pressure, Germaine lobbed the ball to the left corner of the field, but it was under- thrown and Hill picked it off. Michigan State (3-2 Big Ten, 5-4 overall) knocked off a No. 1 for the second time this decade, beating rival Michigan 28-27 in 1990. The Spartans had also done it to Ohio State before, stunning the top-ranked Buckeyes of Woody Hayes 16-13 in 1974. The loss eliminated Ohio State (5-1, 8-1) from consideration for the nation- al championship game Jan. 4 in the Fiesta Bowl. It also jeopardized the Buckeyes' chances of even going to a top-flight bowl. With two weeks left in the season, they are alone in third place in the Big Ten behind Michigan - which they play in the season finale - and unbeaten Wisconsin. The heroes were almost too numer- ous to mention for the Spartans. Burke, a native Ohioan, passed for 323 yards and outdueled Germaine, who had been boosted as a Heisman Trophy contender on the heels of a school-record four straight 300-yard passing games. Burke completed just 18-of-46 passes with one interception, but frequently hit the big pass on long- yardage downs. Michigan QB Tom Brady connects on 27-yard TD pass to Aaron Shea.
