Mfter six-game hiatus, Ray
returns to Michigan n defense

By SharatRaju
Daily Sports Editor
Six weeks have passed. The mid-
way point of the season came and
went. That means two thin'gs -
Marcus Ray can play and the real
season begins.
The Michigan safety, after being
suspended by the University and the
NCAA for involvement with a sports
agent last summer, returns to 22nd-
ranked Wolverines and begins
tomorrow against No. 9 Penn State.
A lot has happened since then. The
Wolverines won all six of their
games despite sloppy play and con-
ditions. The total defense improved

dramatically from 96th in the coun-
try to 14th. The Wolverines have
reemerged into the national picture.
Now Ray - who was relieved of
his tri-captain title following his sus-
pension - will join a unit that has
carried the Wolverines in the past
four games.
Marcus "has had a good attitude
towards all this," Michigan corner-
back Andre Weathers said. "He's
ready to contribute."
But that's about all anyone has
heard about Ray.
How much will he impact the
defense?
How much will he play?

Will he play at all?
Michigan coach Lloyd Carr has
the answers but also has been tight-
lipped about the whole situation.
At the weekly Big Ten media tele-
conference, Carr refused to comment
about Ray at all.
Regardless of whether or not Ray
will have an impact, the Wolverines
(5-0 Big Ten, 6-2 overall) have much
more to worry about. Namely, Penn
State (3-1, 6-1).
"This year Penn State is a lot bet-
ter than last year," Weathers said.
"Their defense is attacking, their
offense is moving the ball. We have
to have a total team effort in order to
overcome Penn State."
Everyone remembers last season's
game, billed by the media as
'Judgment Day.' No. 1 Penn State,
undefeated and playing the friendly
confines of Beaver Stadium, were
embarrassed by a confident Charles
Woodson-led Michigan, 34-8.
But with Woodson's departure
from the secondary after last season,
the defensive backs have had diffi-
culty in regaining that swagger.
"From the beginning, we have
improved a lot since then," Weathers
said. "We're coming together and
we're improving every game."
But the Wolverines haven't played
a challenging opponent since Ray
left after the Notre Dame game.
"A lot of people counted us out
because we lost the first two games
early," Weather said. "And we strug-
gled here and there but one good
thing is that we believe in ourselves
and that's all that matters."

How much will Marcus Ray ph
strong safety and Lloyd Carr re

MATCHUPS
Continued from Page 4
As for Penn State's special teams,
they kick for a little more yardage on
punts, have converted two more field
goals and are nearly as good as
Michigan on extra points.
As long as neither team loses the
game on special teams (i.e. fumbles),
this should be inconsequential.
EDGE: EVEN
INTANGIBLES:
No. 22 Michigan is supposed to be
ranked in the top 10, but No. 9 Penn
State is. Michigan is supposed to have
the suffocating linebackers, but Penn
State's appear on the CNN Play of the
Day.
EDGE: PENN STATE
Regardless of these facts, Michigan
is at home and needs to win this game
for respectability.
They need to win this game to prove
to themselves that they are not the
Michigan teams of the mid-'90s (or
ever of last week.)
As LloydwCarr told his players,
"This is the reason you come to
Michigan."
