The Wolverines are competing in the Rolex Regional, which will be held in East Lansing. The three-day event starts tomorrow and finishes on Monday. Michigan coach Brian Eisner sees the Regional as vital. The Rolex Regional "is the most important tournament of the fall for the region," Eisner said. "You get to see where we are with respect to everyone else." What marks this regional from other tournaments is the quality of the competition. The best in the midwest will be on the courts this weekend. "This is probably going to be the strongest regionals we have had in a Fong time," Eisner said. "Twelve play- ers from this region qualified for the All-American main draw, way more than in previous years." The tournament is also important because the two singles finalists and the winning doubles team automati- cally qualify for the National Indoors in Dallas. "If we perform real well it would be even more of an accomplishment because the competition in this tour- nament is so strong," Eisner said. THE MATCHUPS MICHIGAN PASSING OFFENSE VS. PENN STATE PASSING DEFENSE Tal Streets is 6-foot-4 inches. Penn State's tallest starting defensive back Is 5-11. What does that mean? A lot of alley-oop passes to Streets from Tom Brady. Edge: Michigan ----------------- - - E MICHIGAN RUSHING OFFENSE VS. PENN STATE RUSHING DEFENSE With the Michigan rushing game sputtering In recent weeks - it lost 23 yards last week -- Linebacker U should have a field day. Edge: Penn State PENN STATE PASSING OFFENSE VS. MICHIGAN PASSING DEFENSE The Penn State passing combination of quarterback Kevin Thompson and wideout Chafie Fields have been lethal lately. But Michigan returns safe- ty Marcus Ray from a six-game suspension. Edge: Even aaaaaaa---- aaagaaa ,;a..a--w--------- ------- --..------;---- PENN STATE RUSHING OFFENSE VS. MICHIGAN PASSING DEFENSE If Curtis Enis had stayed in Happy Valley, this would be a pretty good matchup. But Cordell Mitchell doesn't have the skill to match up with an aggressive, rugged Michigan defense. Edge: Michigan SPECIAL TEAMS Jason Vinson made up for his end zone fumble with timely punts last week- end. Jay Feely has settled the placekicking situation. Penn State's kickers are pretty similar to Michigan's in skill and execution. Edge: Even ...............-......CC..CCCCCCCCC~CCCCCCCCCCCCCCC INTANGIBLES Michigan is undefeated in the Big Ten. Penn State is the. ninth-ranked team in the country. The Nittany Lions are also favored at Michigan Stadium, something that is quite rare. Edge: Penn State PREDICTION: MICHIGAN 18, PENN STATE 13 MATCHUPS Continued from Page 8 SPECIAL TEAMS: Fumbling a punt into the end zone last week was the worst thing punter Jason Vinson could have done. But he nailed kicks late in the game, setting up Michigan's game-winning safety. As for Penn State's special teams, they kick for a little more yardage on punts, have con- verted two more field goals and are near- ly as good as Michigan on extra points. EDGE: EVEN INTANGIBLES: No. 22 Michigan is supposed to be ranked in the top 10, but No. 9 Penn State is. Michigan is supposed to have the suffocating linebackers, but Penn State's appear on the CNN Play of the Day. EDGE: PENN STATE Regardless of these facts, Michigan is at home and needs to win this game for respectability. As Lloyd Carr told his players, "This is the reason you come to Michigan.
