See for your- self: He's from Terre Haute, Ind. - as 'Hoosier' as a town can be - where his dad coached football at Indiana State. He went to Indiana. Played bas- ketball for Bobby Knight and foot- ball for Lee Corso. He is married to a girl from Bloomington. 1 Even his hair is Hoosier red. In short, there - is no other perfect candidate to lead the Hoosiers into respectability on Cameron the gridiron. Not to mention that he is a pretty remarkable coach. In only his second season at the helm, teams are fearing the Hoosiers. Indiana has been in a position to win each of its six games, blowing late-game leads each time. A 3-3 record overall (1-2 Big Ten) is already better than last year's 2-9 finish. "I'm satisfied we're heading in the right direction," Cameron said. The path back to Bloomington took two significant detours, howev- er. After graduating in 1983 from Indiana, Cameron considered taking MATCHUPS Continued from Page 4 from his quarterback might get even Lloyd Carr smiling. OK, maybe not. But it would go a long way toward a Michigan victory. EDGE: MICHIGAN SPECIAL TEAMS Jay Feely hit a clutch field goal last week, which was just this side of remarkable considering that the turf conditions had only gotten worse since his two early misses. Jason Vinson was Carr's designated "he-had-his-best- game-at-Michigan" player of the week. Sophomore placekicker Andy Payne could be a good one for the Hoosiers. He's connected on eight of nine field goals this year, and is the Big Ten's fourth-leading scorer. On the other hand, Indiana lists exactly zero punters among the league's top 10. Of 11 teams. EDGE: MICHIGAN INTANGIBLES The Wolverines have the crowd, the momentum, the all-important running game and a shot at the Big Ten title. The Hoosiers have Randle El, the option, the other Randle El and the pick-and-roll. EDGE: MICHIGAN PREDICTION: MICHIGAN 30, INDIANA 20 a job somewhere as an assistant coach. So, he talked to Bobby Knight, who felt Cameron should become a basketball coach. Cameron wanted to coach foot- ball, so Knight just called up Bo Schembechler at Michigan. The next day, Cameron was hired as a graduate assistant for the Wolverines. Cameron gained experience under the legendary Schembechler and then successor Gary Moeller. But Cameron credits his own coach- ing skill to someone else. "I had the privilege of working with Lloyd" Carr, Cameron said. "I was lucky to watch Lloyd. He taught me how to coach." Carr and Cameron were assistants together for the Wolverines in the early 1990s. In those 10 seasons together, the Wolverines went to five Rose Bowls, won six Big Ten championships, and only once ended up .500 or worse. While Carr handled the defensive coaching responsibilities, Cameron was the quarterback coach. He had a significant role in the development of future NFL signal- callers Jim Harbaugh, Elvis Grbac and Todd Collins, not to mention working with a slew of dangerous wide receivers including Desmond Howard. After his successful 10-season stint with the Wolverines, Cameron was snatched up by the professional ranks. During his three seasons, the Redskins improved each year, starting at 3-13 in his first season to 6-10 in the next and 9-7 in the third. It's hard to say just how much Cameron's presence influenced the improvement, but it was enough to earn him the head coaching job back in Bloomington in 1997. At Indiana, he made some changes. The Astroturf was removed from Memorial Stadium. The uniforms were changed, including adding a black helmet. The traditional 'IU' logo also changed. But the biggest change is the suc- cess Indiana has had this season, leading the Big Ten in rushing offense and in the top five in passing offense. Fittingly from Cameron's stand- point, Indiana's success has been behind a freshman quarterback - Antwaan Randle El. This weekend's game at Michigan (3-0, 4-2) marks Cameron's first return back to Ann Arbor as a coach. The Hoosiers have proved that they are dangerous and on the verge of something big. Could the next big step for the program be getting a victory in Michigan Stadium? "We all know one thing in this league, Lloyd's going to make it dif- ficult for us," Cameron said. So far this season, it's Cameron who's been making it difficult for everyone else. Indiana coach Cam Cameron v Michigan defense today.
