I The Michigan Daily - SportsMonday - October 12, 1998 - 7B Chase rocks 'M' record books RECORDS Continued from Page 18 percentage, setting a new school and arena record. The previous Michigan record was held by Alison Noble and Szczesniak, who both had single- match attack percentages of .650. The arena record of .681 had belonged to Michigan State's Becky Belanger. That record stood for nine years. "I couldn't be happier," Chase said. "I just went out tonight and wanted to keep the ball on the court. I swung and I tried to make them play defense. I was swinging as hard as I possibly could out there. Good things happen when you keep going." Chase's effort paid off. She domi- nated the Gophers' defense and scored at crucial moments. "It was as dominating as (any) out- side hitter performance I've ever seen," Giovanazzi said. "That was incredible. Anytime we needed a side-out or anything, she put it away." Ebert also set a personal record on the offensive end with her 13 kills. She now has 804 for her career. In addition to stellar performances and emotional play, part of the Chasing Records Michigan senior Karen Chase'blasted her way into the Michigan and Cliff Keen Arena record books Friday night with an .808 attack percentage. Old Record Held by .650 attack percentage Alison Noble, Jeanne Szczesniak .681 attack percentage* Becky Belanger, MSU Chase *Cliff Keen Arena record, set in 1989. Wolverines' success can be attrib- uted to a few changes in their offense. So far this season, the Wolverines have been looking for a comfortable replacement for All-America setter Linnea Mendoza, who graduated last year. After Friday night, they may have found it. Sophomore Alija Pittenger took over Mendoza's role in the game, returning the Wolverines to a single- setter offense. In previous matches, Pittenger had been sharing the responsibility with freshman Shannon Melka. "Changing the offense and having just one setter may have made a dif- ference," Giovanazzi said. "There are a lot of seniors on this team and there's a comfort zone that we played this offense the entire time that Linnea was here. We're used to that, but more than anything it was just a great performance as a team." Additionally, Giovanazzi credits his team's intensity on defense for making the biggest difference in the match. "I thought the blocking was great, a lot to deflections. It made our defense better," Giovanazzi said. "The most key thing was that we sided-out consistently and that we did well on serve and receive." The Wolverines will use the momentum from Friday's match as they head to Happy Valley next Friday to face No.I Penn State. "I think it's a big momentum builder for what's coming up next weekend," Szczesniak said. "We didn't come out playing not to lose, we came out playing to win." &insey Ebert set a personal record with 13 kills against Minnesota Friday night.- DAVID ROCHKIND/Daily 'M' tennis big, bright 1eep in ieart of Texas 9 I i. By Nick Felzen For the Daily The Michigan men's tennis team is playing its first match of the season in the All-American Tournament in Austin, Texas. So far, the squad is more than holding its own. "I am very pleased with the day, our quys beat a lot of good players," Michigan coach Brian Eisner said. Saturday, three Michigan players won their first two rounds of singles. Michigan's Will Farah defeated Kolie Van Zyl of Alabama Birminyham, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, before beating Jon Pontikas of Texas-San Antonio, 6-3, 6-3. Michigan's Matt Wright downed both Ron Hamdan of Nebraska, 6-2, 6-1 and Dan Healey of Mississippi State, 6-2, 3. Michigan's Henry Beam cruised in s first-round match against T.S. Ahrend of East Central, 6-0, 6-0, and then destroyed Fank Tadej of Georgia State 6-4, 6-0. Michigan's Brad McFarlane won his three-set match against Matt Bender of Wichita State, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. But McFarlane lost his second-round match to Bruno Puzzi of Southwest Louisiana, 7-5, 6-1. Michigan's Ben Cox beat Todd Petty of Texas-San Antonio, 6-1, 6-4, and lost to Jose Lieberman of Miami (Fla.), 6-4, 6-4. Nonetheless, Cox's close match with Lieberman was impressive because Lieberman is a top-ranked junior-level player. Michigan's Danny McCain lost to Ron Aranburo of Texas A&M, 6-2, 6-2, and Michigan's Jake Raiton lost to Joey Michalsky of Baylor, 6-3, 6-4. Michigan was even more successful in doubles matches, going four-for-four on the first day. - yter " Mfent University Activities Center Presents ff-n Y 1 1 #?s 3' ?:: 4> .' , 4 .4 7 > Js_. .. >, . >4 . >4' V V.- ~,V ~ A; A N .,>~; - 4 ' '4>' 44..> /4,,> ' .4,.
