But as soon as school starts, Ellerbe's program goes "a hundred miles an hour," he said. That still might not be fast enough. There are still recruiting trips to make, players' academic well-being to check on, and inaccurate recruit- ing stories to ignore. Especially ones about potential recruits, the kinds that Ellerbe said are easy for publications to fudge. "I don't know where they get that information," Ellerbe said "There's always a lot of kids, a lot of people who are listing us ... and we have not contacted. Or if we did, it was very minimal. Our contact varies, it could just be us sending a questionnaire." But in the rumor-driven world of college basketball recruiting, some- thing like that can lead to a swirl of rumors. "That can be labeled as us 'heav- ily involved' in the recruiting," Ellerbe said. "I really don't know how that happens." He's the one doing the recruiting, so Ellerbe doesn't need to read a word on the subject. He also said he doesn't pay any attention to presea- son predictions, some of which have predicted a dead-last-place finish for his team. "You always have to go to the source, and you know most people don't know the motivation of the source as much as we do," Ellerbe said. "So if I saw that article and who wrote it, I'd probably know exactly where that was going and where it came from. "But I don't pay a whole lot of attention to that." And most of those predictions from last season were wrong any- ways. "People said we were going to be terrible last year, we won the Big Ten tournament, we had some out- standing players, and no one gave us credit for that last season," Ellerbe said. After surprising the conference last season, Ellerbe's team is going through a more rigorous off-season conditioning program this fall. "Once you start playing, because you're out of town so much, it does get a little tough," forward Brandon Smith said. Although there aren't any typical days in coaching, Ellerbe said he's usually awake at 7:30 a.m. and expects to get to bed around 1i p Precious little of that time is spent with his family he loves. Instead, it gets spent on the spot the loves. But last night, he hoped to have an ace up his sleeve. "I'm looking forward to having dinner with my wife," Ellerbe said yesterday. But even then, he won't escape work. An assistant coach from le NBA's Utah Jazz was to eat with them, and they planned to be "talk- ing ball," Ellerbe said. But last night's dinner was meant to be "half- and-half," Ellerbe said. "We'll be talking ball, but it's kind of a break in the day," he said. It's the kind of break that's harder to come by when you're on the road so often. And once the season gets inol swing, as Smith said, "you really have no social life."
