takes a while for them to get back in
the game."
The defense hasn't had a problem
getting into the game early in the
season.
In the Blue/White game,
Blackburn and the White team
pitched a 5-0 shutout, a rarity in a
traditionally high-scoring game.
"I didn't have many tough shots
out there," Blackburn said.
"They played very well defensive-
ly."

Fellow freshman goalie Kevin
O'Malley also held his own for the
Blue team, only allowing two goals
during the first two periods.
The White team finally took com-
mand in the third period, beating
senior Greg Daddario three times in
the midst of sloppy defense.
Matzka led the scoring charge for
the Wolverines, netting two goals.
Matzka drew first blood halfway
through the opening period as he
took a Crozier pass and beat
O'Malley.
His second goal, at 3:55 into the
third period, came off a feed from

Ritchlin.
Crozier added his own goal in the
second period, as he cleaned up a
Bubba Berenzweig rebound and shot
the puck past O'Malley. Krikor
Arman scored a goal and assisted on
a Justin Clark goal in the third peri-
od, helping cement the White team's
domination.
"I'm glad I don't have to play in
another Blue-White game," assistant
captain and Blue member Bobby
Hayes said.
"I'm oh-for-four and I have only
scored two points in a normally
offensive game."

The first weekend of the Michigan
hockey team's season is complete. And
even though they've played only two
games - and those two were exhibitions
- the Wolverines feel they are in good
pads this season. _______-_-
Replacing gradu-
ated goaltender Hockey
Marty Turco, who led Notebook
the team to a national__.-- ____-
championship last season, are freshmen
Josh Blackburn and Kevin O'Malley.
Saturday night against Guelph,
Blackburn took the starting role and
played the whole game.
After facing just seven shots in the
first period, the young goalie's truest test
came in the second, when Guelph had
two 5-on-3 advantages and almost eight
minutes of power-plays.
Blackburn stood strong in his first
'real' game, making several key saves
that preserved Michigan's 3-0 lead.
But the shutout couldn't last in the
third period, when Guelph's Derek Boyer
slapped the puck in early into the last
stanza.
"I felt comfortable today; the last
goal, I could have stopped that normal-
ly,' Blackburn said. "I made some mis-

takes and we'll work on things I messed
up on."
Michigan coach Red Berenson was
complimentary towards his young
goalie.
"He played well, not knowing the
shooters' Berenson said. "Guelph didn't
give him much work in the first period,
and that's a typical Michigan-type game
- where maybe you don't get a lot of
work, and then when you do, they're
tough shots."
Berenson did not officially name the
starting goalie for the season, but came
as close as any coach can after the game
against Guelph.
"I said before the season that
Blackburn would probably be our start-
ing goalie'" Berenson said. "And until
that changes, he probably will be our
starting goalie."
Blackburn even kept focused when a
Guelph player plowed into the goalie,
knocking his mask off.
He was just happy that they stopped
the play immediately after.
"I didn't want to lose any teeth,"
Blackburn said.
Berenson also O'Malley may get ice
time down the road, depending on the
team's situation.
NOT AS BAD AS TURCO: On
Friday night, the two goalies faced off
against each other in the annual
Blue/White exhibition.
Both had only one hope:
Don't play as bad as Turco did in his
initial Blue/White game.
"I was just thinking about what hap-
pened to Turco, his first game,"
Blackburn said. "I was hoping that did-
n't happen."
Turco, in one of his worst perfor-
mances at Michigan, gave up seven
goals in his debut.
Thankfully for the two young
goalies, they were able to maintain their

composure.
Blackburn stopped all 22 shots in a
shutout performance while O'Malley
gave up two goals, one of which he had
little chance to save.
Still, Blackburn gave O'Malley due
credit.
"O'Malley had a lot tougher shots
than I did, he kind of got shelled,"
Blackburn said.
PEE-WEE SUPERSTARS:
During Friday's Blue/White exhibition,
the little guys took over the ice.
Two teams from the Ann Arbor Mini-
Mite league played two five-minute con-
tests in the first and second intermission.
While people walking to the conces-
sion stand were faster than the six-to-
eight year-old kids trying their hardest to
skate down the ice, the action was still
fast-paced enough to get the whole
crowd riled up.
In the first game, neither team could
capitalize on several breakaways, but in
the second game, 7 year-old Chad
Tickner, with all his might, slid the puck
into the goal with only a few seconds
remaining.
When asked about how he liked*
playing at Yost and scoring the only goal,
he had one big word to say: "Yeah."
UNIFORM WOLVERINES:
While the Wolverines performance over
the weekend echoed that of last years
strong start, something was a little dif-
ferent - their uniforms.
While nothing too dramatic changed,
the Wolverines will be sporting uniforms
that have fewer stripes near the bottom
and a solid block 'M' appears on the
chest of all three types.
Fans might notice a few other minor
changes, but overall, the team wanted to
keep a "classic" look.
Michigan officials said that fans will
be able to buy the new sweaters some-
time in November.
