October 5, 1998 - SportsMonday - The Michigan Daily - 58 Women's golf shoots fourth at Wolverine Invite; State wins By Jeff Druchniak For the Daily * After a frustrating day of play shortened by rain, the Michigan women's golf team lowered its score yesterday, but not enough to catch its Big Ten rivals at the Wolverine Women's Golf Invitational. The Wolverines, along with 12 other teams, played 18 holes each this past weekend at the Wolverines' home golf course. Thirty-six holes had origi- nally been scheduled for Saturday, though. Michigan's score of 329 yesterday was good enough to pass Cincinnati for fourth place. Combined with a first- day score of 330, that gave the Wolverines a final score of 659 -- 75 over par. Michigan senior captain Sharon Park was two strokes off the lead after shooting a 76 on Saturday, but could only hold on to her second- place status with an 80 yesterday. chigan State's Kasey Gant took the Wividual title. Michigan State also won the tour- nament with a score of 626, good for 42 over par. Purdue and Northwestern finished second and third, respectively, shooting 652 and 655. Michigan coach Kathy Teichert said she was pleased with some of the team members' improved efforts yes- terday. That, however, did not redeem the weekend as a whole. ~"It's disappointing because we shot 132 on Tuesday for the qualifying (round)," Teichert said. "So we're a better team than that." With only one senior to go with a sophomore and four freshmen, Teichert said she was still learning things about her team's individual strengths and weaknesses, and "looking for who will step up and challenge themselves." She was, nonetheless, heartened by improved consistency of Misia Lemanski, who shot an 83-82 to finish at 19 over par. In addition, Leanne Wicks rebounded from an 87 Saturday to post an 82 yesterday, giving her a 23- over 169 for the weekend. The Wolverines now have two weeks to prepare for the Big Ten Championships at Purdue University. "Some people were unhappy with their scores," freshman Misia Pmanski said. "It was a rough week or us, (and) we didn't get a whole lot of practice. "Hopefully, we'll be able to really get some practice in these next two weeks."
