16 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 29, 1998 I Ko sick to return next week N EWCOM ERS Continued from Page 13 With a big smile on his face, Blackburn had one more thing to say. "It's great, I love it here," he said. Senior captain Bubba Berenzweig loves the new freshmen, but still warns that they will make many mis- takes. "They look like possibly the best freshmen in the nation," Berenzweig said. "When you come in here your going to be a top player and so they look like top players from wherever they came from. "They still need to get used to our systems and learn that they can't make moves at the blue line on a defenseman in college hockey." QUESTION MARK KosicK: Sophomore Mark Kosick hopes to return to skating tomorrow after dis. locating his shoulder last week dur- ing captain's practices. Last Tuesday, Kosick skated down the boards, he cut to the middle through two defenseman. Kosick almost plowed into senior goaltender Greg Daddario in the process. After trying to swerve around his goalie, Kosick plowed into the boards against his shoulder. Unfortunately for Kosick, the most he could do yesterday was watch his teammates and ride the exercise bike. But he is still hopeful to fully practice by the end of the week. "Now it's just a matter of mending it back together," Kosick said. "I'll be on the ice next week." The Wolverines will lose Kosick for the Blue-White exhibition and most likely the game against Guelph. THE BATTLE OF THE COLORS: The Wolverines will once again take part in the annual Blue-White Game this Friday, 7 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena. Berenson will split up his squad into two different teams with three lines each. This gives almost every player a good chunk of playing time for them to earn positions. But the real treat for fans will be the "Skate with the Wolverines." After the game, the players will rush to the locker room, switch jer- seys, comb their hair, then come back out onto the ice where they will sign autographs for anyone who wants one. Adults and children alike can bring their own skates or rent them for $1, and then skate out to the ice to greet the players. Tickets for the Blue-White game cost $4 for adults and SI for children and are currently on sale at Yost Ice Arena. Proceeds will go to charity. JUST GUELPH IT: The game against Guelph on Saturday will count on Michigan's record, but doesn't count towards its NCAA or CCHA standing. The team from Canada will be the last warm-up for the Wolverines before their first regular season matchup against Lake Superior on Oct. 11. The game against the Lakers will be a very emotional game for both fans and upperclassmen because the national championship banner will be raised at Yost Ice Arena. Michigan officials hope to give out mini banners to fans who come to the game. limill- III Woe 0 JOHN KRAFC Mike Van Ryn was very busy this summer, playing In the World Inline Hockey Championships and being drafted in the first round by the New Jersey Devils. Van Ryn will be equally busy this season as he leads an experienced group of Michigan defensemen in defense of their national title. Berenson impressed with team's condition as new season begins PRACTICE Continued from Page 13 expressed his relative satisfaction with Michigan's display on the first day. "Nobody looked out of place. Certainly there was a good tempo and good intensity. We don't have a lot of time to get ready to play ... but I thought we got a lot accomplished today," he said. Berenzweig, returning for his Y fourth year at Michigan, was a bit more critical of the team's first prac- tice. "Our passes weren't crisp, and we couldn't hold on to the puck, so that was a little bit of a let down," he said. "But in the second half of practice, people just seemed to get used to each other, and you saw a lot of improvements within an hour." Berenson said he has been impressed with the level of play he is already receiving from the defense- men, five of whom are returning from last year. So far, at least nine defenders have proven to Berenson that they will compete for playing time. Up front, things aren't quite as solid, due in large part to last year's graduation and the injury to sopho- more center Mark Kosick. Berenson said he is adding walk- ons for each practice, and that as many as six may scrimage at the Blue-White game. Still, the early expectations Berenzweig spoke of seem to have been met. "Overall, I'm impressed with the level of conditioning and strength testing," Berenson said. "Most of our players increased what they w_ able to do a year ago. I think v a good summer." The team will use the short time has before this weekend's compe tion to sharpen handling skills a build endurance. "We're working on the sin things, sophomore Josh Langfc said. "Getting the puck out, using t glass if you're in trouble - it's t little things that are going t .e you right now." Langfeld's handling skills we responsible for the game-winni overtime goal in last season's NC championship game. But, as t theme of yesterday's practice seem to be, that was last season. "On paper we're good. But } haven't beaten anybody ye Langfeld said. Dave Huntzicker and the Michigan hockey team didn't beat Michigan State last year, but it really didn't matter, as the Wlverines won their second national championship in three years. Michigan doesn't want to go winless against the Spartans this year though.
