14 - The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, September 16, 1998 EAGLES Continued from Page lA Schmitt tired from 30 yards out nd managed to catch the goalie ol guard by sending a sailing shot into the corner of the net. "It might have looked like a ct-ossed ball, but it was a shot," Schmitt said. "I noticed that Eastern's goalie was out of position. She was assuming I was going to set a cross, so I shot instead. Goalkeeper and co-captain Jessica Jones, favoring a bruised knee sutered earlier in the half, allowed the Eagles to even the score on an unearned goal moments later. Attempting to make a routine save on a shot on goal, the ball Slipped beyond Jones's grip and flew nto the net, evening the score at 1-1. In the second half both teams mus- tered a few offensive drives - Michigau even sent two halls Cashing into the crossbar but the theme was the same, a midfield grndge match with minimal olTensive productivity. "We were not clicking ofensively,' coach Debbie elkin said. 'Eastern were physical and pumped up and we were not playing our usual passing game." But the Wolverine defense was doing a good job stopping the occasional Eagle threat, according to Belkin,. "We were playing solid defense. it was just that when we won the balls in our backfield we were not making good passes. After the second 45-minute half drew to a close with the score tied at 1-1, two tired and battered teams retired to their sidelines in perparation for sudden- death overtime. A focused Michigan team returned action and put the game away alter o - five minutes and 16 seconds of oft'3n- sive domination. The goal came as ManrilolT passed off to a sprinting Jessica I.imauro, who dribblod to the 18-yard line and hit :he far corner, sealing the victory for the Woverines. "I saw Jessica beating her opponent so I thought I would give her a through- ball,' junior Mari ttoff said. "Once s received the ball, I knew she was going to score." Following her game winning goal, Limauro expressed how pleased she was to end the tiring match. "Thank God we scored, because I could not have managed to play anoth- er 30 minutes!" Ninety minutes of regulation took a greater toll on " Eastern Michigan than the , Wolverines. At least Michigan came back to '. Ann Arbor with a ' victory - albeit in overtime. DANA UNNANE/Daily Softball tries to continue dynasy DANA LINNANE/Dai Very little can match the drama of an overtime victory, as Michigan found out yesterday. The Wolverines won in overtime, 2-1, on a Jessica Limauro goal from 18 yards out on a pass from Mar Hoff. Following the game, Limauro was more relieved than excited, exclaiming, "Thank God we scored, because I could not have managed to play another 30 minutes!" Every Wednesday By Mark Fancescuttl Daily Sports Writer With national championship hopes in some sports gone for Michigan fans, it's not too hard to start thinking about the Michigan softball team. And why not? The girls of spring are a near-dynasty. The Wolverines have won four straight of, well, a lot of things. Four straight Big Ten championships, four straight 50-win seasons, and four straight NCAA World Series appear- ances. The Wolverines finished the 1997-98 season with a team-record 56 victories. Michigan finished ranked No. 6 in the nation after placing fifth in the World Series. It may be still summer, but the team is already at work to extend its dynasty to five years. And, possibly, add the only thing that has eluded the Wolverines in their 19- year history - a World Series champi- onship. Will year 20 be the charm? The Wolverines will begin their quest at the Elk Rapids tournament in Elk Rapids, Mich., starting Friday. The Wolverines will have a slightly different look than last year Besides losing five players and gain- ing four freshmen, the team has'a new assistant coach, as Jennifer Brundage replaces Kelly Kovach in the dugout. Brundage joins ibhigan alter assist- ing at t..I.A and Tennessee- Chattanooga. And as for the players, they can't wait to start. "We're all really excited," junior third baseman Pam Kosanke said. "Everyone looks sharp, and we've had some really good practices" The Elk Rapids tournament also gives the team a chance to play a less stressful set of games. "It's kind of a fun and see-the-fresh- men weekend," Kosanke said. "We'll do our best to pick up where we left off." Practice during the fill is vital for the team for many reasons, but most impor- tantly, it allows the freshman to get adjusted and ready to play. Michigan's recruiting class is one of its best ever, with four highly rated freshmen. Utility player Mary Conner, pitcher Kate Eiland, second baseman Kelsey Kollen, and catcher Stephanie Volpe have a huge weight on their shoulders - replacing five players from last sea- son's 56-7 squad. The Wolverines lost Sara Grif, Lisa Kelley, Jennifer McKittrick and Kellyn Tate to graduation. 'Ihey also lost another letterwinner in Stacy Judd. Still, Kosanke likes what she sees from her young teammates. "The freshmen look really good" Kosanke said. "They have a lot of det r- mination to get better." And the Wolverines only need improve a little bit to grab that elusU crown. "That's always the goal, but it's takirg baby steps to get there again," Kosanke said. "We've got a Big Ten banner tip and (coach Carol Hutchins) tells us to make sure every time you step on the field, that that is where we wantto go.'
