Marquise By Mark Snyder Since the glory days of Bo Schembechler, the concept of the "Michigan defense" has remained cru- cial to any success the Wolverines enjoy. Last season, under new defensive coordinator Jim Herrmann, Michigan led the nation in numerous statistical categories. Opponent point totals dipped dangerously low, finishing below 10 for the season average. Rushing yards? Nowhere to be found. Curtis Enis was the only back to dent Michigan's defense for a 100-yard game - and most of his yards came in the fourth quarter after the outcome was secure. After a 36-point trouncing against Notre Dame, the defense must regroup, but with the talent returning, it shouldn't take much time to round into form. Sure, skeptics will abound as Glen Steele and Charles Woodson have advanced to the NFL. But that's it. Nine other starters return on the defensive side of the ball and with another summer of conditioning and growth, there's no reason they shouldn't be better, as coach Lloyd Carr said. "Bill Walsh said, 'Not all of your players will play as well as last year," Carr said. "But I'm asking them, if they're not better, why not?" With their noses to the grindstone, here is the breakdown of Michigan's personnel -on the defensive side of the ball. On last season's defense, the sec- ondary - led by Woodson - provided a safety net for the rest of the defense. This year, the strength is a few feet for- However you look at them, they get the job done. Sword and Jones were the team leaders in tackles last year, and both received all-conference considera- tion. Adding to the depth at the position are freshmen Victor Hobson and Larry Foote - highly touted recruits expected to make an immediate impact. "We're loaded," Sword said. "Besides Dhani, Clint and myself, we also have a lot of other great linebackers people haven't seen. We expect great things from those guys" Applying the pass rush was one of Herrmann's mantras last season, and that can't happen unless the front four applies the pressure. This may be where PAUL TALANIAN! Daily Junior Josh Williams returns to a defensive line that should be solid, but instead could suffer after losing Glen Steele to graduation. ward, finding its roots in the All- America corps of linebackers. What's that you say? All-Americans are individuals, not groups? Well, in this case, there is a trio of worthy candi- dates, all of whom combine to swarm opposing quarterbacks. Since 1991, just Jarrett Irons and Erick Anderson have garnered such recognition - but that could all change this season. Seniors Clint Copenhaver and Sam Sword, along with junior Dhani Jones, are already receiving award considera- tions - all are preseason Butkus Award candidates. The unity among the group - the trio is joined by Ian Gold in the starting rota- tion - comes from familiarity with each other, along with their fearless leader. "My position coach (Herrmann) is more like a father figure away from home and Coach Carr is like a grandfa- ther," said philosopher Jones. "That's how it is for everybody. You kind of take on a family at Michigan. All the line- backers, they're all brothers - coach Herrmann is our father." 1 on College Ringel Michigan will feel its biggest loss. Glen Steele, currently in a three-point stance for .the Cincinnati Bengals, provided relentless pressure in the opponent's backfield lut just as is the Michigan way, there player prepared to fill the void. Juaquin Feazell, a fifth-year senior who had yet to find a secure position on the line, has finally found a home in Steele's defensive end spot. Despite starting in only three games, Feazell's was respected enough by his teammates to have been selected as one of the team's three captains. "Juaquin Feazell is, in my judgment, one of the finest people I've been able to coach," Carr said. "He was kind of an unsung guy on this team a year ago and I know he's going to provide great lead- ership." James Hall returns at his rush linebacker position, with Rob Renes and Josh Williams as the tackles. The trio contributed 15 sacks last season as Herrmann employed his See DEFENSE, Page 9B 4 Downs, David 5 Whitley, James 6 Hobson. Victor 6 Edwards, Manus 7 Henson. Drew 8 Cross, Walter 8 Parini.
