Fortunately, the

If there is a glaring deficiency on the
team, it has to be the kicking game.
Walk-on Jason Vinson held his own as
the punter, but Michigan missed three
field goals and had one blocked against
Notre Dame.
This is an area where All-America
freshman Hayden Epstein can contribute,
but thus far, Carr appears content to stay
with the veterans.
"I would expect that (kicker) Jay Feely
will be much improved," Carr said prior
to the opener. "I do anticipate our kicking
game being stronger, and it will have to
be, because we did some things at the end
of the last year that are unacceptable."
The Woodson void on punt returns
will be filled by sophomore Whitley, and
Clarence Williams, who fumbled one
against Notre Dame and Anthony
Thomas, will handle kickoff duties.

Marcus Ray isn't just the leader of Michi
entire defense,

He joins Tommy Hendricks as the anony-
mous duo, which, without Woodson's
enormous shadow, should.this year gain
more notoriety for its consistent play. Be
assured, though, that their spots are far
from secure_- especially with the talent-
ed freshman class.
"Cato June and Todd Howard are the
freshmen at (cornerback) and have
looked good in practice," Carr said. "We
will have to see how they adjust to the

against Notre Dame, getting beat repeat-

Marcus Ray sat at Big Ten media day
in Chicago turning from one reporter to
another, answering the same question
time and again.
Finally, after a half hour of answering
questions about his former roommate,
Michigan's strongest safety decided he
didn't want to talk about his best friend,
Charles Woodson, anymore. Instead, he
wanted to concentrate on the players that
play for this year's Michigan team.
And so the complex continues. While
the players contend that, despite his tal-
ents, they are not worried about
Woodson's departure, it is plainly evident
that everyone must pick up the slack.
"Woodson had the ability to take the
best receiver in the country out of the
game, which he did," Carr said. "I don't
