McNabb not concerned with Heisman

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - The Heisman
hype has begun anew for Donovan McNabb.
It's in big print at the top of his two pages in the
Syracuse football media guide, and he knows
his name will be bandied about again, as it was
at the start of last year.
He doesn't want to hear it, though. At least
not right now.
"I don't worry about the Heisman, and I
don't think the Heisman worries about me,"
McNabb said as he began practice in earnest
for his final year at Syracuse. "I'm just out
here to put our team in position to win every

game. We have goals we want to achieve. I
want to be the best at my position, and in order
to achieve that I have to lead this team to vic-
tory.
McNabb has done that consistently since he
beat out Keith Downing for the quarterback
job three years ago. Syracuse has won 25 reg-
ular-season games and two of three bowl
games in his three years as the starter, but each
season has had its big disappointments.
In 1995, when McNabb was voted unani-
mously as Big East Conference rookie of the
year, it was a season-ending loss to hated

Miami. Two years ago, Syracuse was highly
rated in the preseason, then dropped its first
two games. And last year, after a superb 34-0
thrashing of a well-regarded Wisconsin team in
the Kickoff Classic, Syracuse again hit the
skids with an embarrassing home loss to 22-
point underdog North Carolina State.
But last year McNabb matured a lot despite
a so-so 9-4 season that ended with a 35-18 loss
to Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl.
"He's evolved tremendously," Syracuse
offensive coordinator Kevin Rogers said. "The
guy is legitimately a great player."
