C'mon in. The water's fine.
That's the only invite sophomore All-
America Chris Thompson and his Michigan
swimming teammates needed to produce
some pretty impressive times over the
weekend at the three-day Texas Invitational
hosted by the University of Texas..
On Sunday, Thompson won the 1,650-
yard freestyle with a meet record time of
14:54.59 and automatically qualified for
the NCAAs in March. Senior co-captain
Tom Malchow also brought home a title on
Sunday in the 200 butterfly with an NCAA
consideration time of 1:46.29.
Sophomore Scott Werner added a second-
place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a
time of 1:59.84 that also could also have
NCAA consideration. Werner was part of
the one of the most exciting races of the
invitational when he was touched out by
meet champion Jason Flint of Texas
Christian University, who finished at
1:59.50.
Along with Thompson, Malchow and
Werner, the rest of the team registered
some much-improved performances
throughout the non-scored invitational.
Without having an actual team champi-
onship at stake, the meet's emphasis was
placed on improving individual bests.
"Overall, the team made tremendous
improvements," Michigan coach Jon
Urbanchek said. "They're coming along."
Outside of the spectacular swims by his
meet champions, Urbanchek was especially
pleased with the performances of his two
workhorses - senior co-captain Andy Potts
and freshman Jason Mallory.
Urbanchek said both.swam well consider-
ing they were the busiest Wolverines at the
meet.
"It was like an iron man competition for
those two," Urbanchek said. "They both
competed probably 14 or 15 times in three
days. Fourteen plunges is a lot."
Of the various events Potts and Mallory
swam in, they were most impressive in the
500 free and the 200 individual medley. In
the 500, both finished in the consolation
finals - Mallory placed 10th at 4:28.58
and Potts took 13th at 4:31.36.
In the 200 IM, Mallory placed 13th with
a time of 1:51.69 and Potts finished 19th at
1:52.67.
Urbanchek also said that he was satisfied
with the performance of his crop of fresh-
men. Freshman Tim Siciliano returned to
action after missing the first month of the
season with a shoulder injury. His come-
back was highlighted by a 16th-place finish
in the consolation finals of the 500 free at
4:33.84.
Urbanchek's other freshmen also added
to the Michigan improvement.
"The freshmen are coming along, I was
happy with their performance," Urbanchek
said. "Although, our freshmen are going to
have to step it up this season if we want the
Big Ten championship back."
Now, Urbanchek and his squad have a
month before their next set of meets, out on
the West Coast against national powerhous-
es UCLA and Southern Cal. After getting
through finals, Urbanchek's swimmers have
an intense period of holiday training to look
forward to in Hawai'i. The team will travel
to the islands to do a bulk of its training for
the season.
"Right now, we have to regroup, and get
through finals;" said Urbanchek.
Urbanchek is hoping that the progression
of his team will continue to the West Coast
next month and to Big Tens in March.
"We want the Big Ten championship
back," Urbanchek said.

PUT IT ON THE NET
Fan clubs and chat rooms spread the 'M' hockey word
By Mark Francescutti
Daily Sports Writer
It's funny what one can find on the
Internet.
With a few minutes and a search
en me, a whole new world opens up.
one path on the information super
highway leads to Michigan hockey.
The Wolverines have the most fan
pages - more than 20 - of any col-
lege hockey program in the country.
And with the number of Internet sites
growing exponentially, there will cer-
tainly be more and more information
available in the computer age.
"I think it's good because it's anoth-
e forum to get more exposure for the
n," Michigan coach Red Berenson
said.
For example, one night, a search
through the Daily's vast hockey
archives - a big file cabinet filled
with papers, media guides and leftover
pizza crusts from years ago, all
arranged in a nice, impossible-to-find-
anything mess - was intended to find
some statistics on former Michigan
goalie Steve Shields.
Without media guides from past
}s, the hour-long search ended with
no luck. But a quick search on the
Internet produced the right results.
One can visit a page called the "I
love Steve Shields page" at www.geoc-
ities.com/Colosseum/2804/ShieldsShri
ne.htinl. On the site, the author talks
about meeting Shields and posts pho-
tos and trading cards of the Sharks
goalie.
ut there also were statistics - sta-
ti cs of Shields during his four years
at Michigan - and that's all that was
needed that night.
But while Shields may have a web-
site created by one fan, current senior
assistant captain Dale Rominski has a
Website and a whole fan club devoted
to him.
The Dale Rominski Fan Club prides
itself on being "The Only Fan Club for
two-time National Champion Dale
Rominski." Located at www-person-
al.engin.umich.edu/-mrchw/drfc, the
club, founded by six Michigan stu-
dents, welcomes all to join by filling
out an online form.
Michigan engineering junior
Cameron Hamilton-Wright went to the
same high school as Rominski, and
being an avid fan himself, decided to
Webmaster the site.
"We saw him one game when he was
the star of the game, and my friend said
'Why don't we create a Dale Rominski
Fan Club?"' Cameron-Wright said. "I
was bored one day and so I did it."
The site, which has been visited by
almost 1,500 people in its one-year
existence, is updated about every
month.
"It's just a fun little thing on the
Net," Cameron-Wright said.
Although the club's description of
members isn't fully stated - "Lindsay
From the Real World was seen waving
to Dale and was at the Notre Dame
game on 11/21/98," so all of a sudden
she's a member - Rominski says it's
all in good fun.
"Lindsay is in one of my classes so I
know her," Rominski said. "I don't
know any of (the creators), but it's a
well-done page and a lot of my friends
and family find it fun. It's really
funny."
Rominski especially liked the dedi-
cation from the Webmasters to Emma
Kate Freatman - a friend Rominski
often visited in the hospital before she
died of cancer - on the website.
"They put her picture on the web,"
Rominski said. "That made her family
feel great. It's really nice."
Although Rominski hasn't met any
of the creators, he has communicated
with them via e-mail.
"They've e-mailed me and I've e-
mailed them," Rominski said.
As for any other fan clubs of present
players, nothing has been reported yet.
"The only psycho fans I have had
was an 1I year-old girl holding up an 'I
love Bubba' sign," captain Bubba
Berenzweig said.
Berenson says there haven't been
any problems with overzealous fans.
"I think players always get a certain
amount of calls and e-mails from fans
from time to time, but that's not a big
issue," Berenson said.
Five Michigan players - Scott
Matzka, Geoff Koch, Mark Kosick,
Sean Ritchlin and Sean Peach - have
created their own Websites, which,
Rominski said were done for a class.
But for those diehard fans, there's
even more on the net, including chat
rooms and message boards on which
fans post the latest news and gripe
about the most recent games. Some
Websites also house pictures of past
seasons' NCAA championships.
And even other schools show
Michigan spirit.
Jason Paul, a Northern Michigan
student, runs his own Michigan hockey
Website and loves it.
"I was born and raised in Ann Arbor,
so I guess that explains it," Paul said.
Last year "one of my teachers found
out I was a Michigan hockey fan and
when taking attendance announced me
as not being there, but rather on cloud
nine for the rest of the school year."
Berenson, however, won't be joining
the Rominski fan club or making a
Website anytime soon.
"No," Berenson joked. "I'm not an
active Internet browser."
