26 - The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, September 9, 1998 'M' tennis gets an infusion of youth to replace experience 4 By Mark Francascutti Daily Sports Writer As every college season comes to an end, a coach and a team must say good-bye to another kindred. The Michigan men's tennis team was almost was cut in half when it lost seniors Brook Blain, Arvid Swan, Dave Paradzik and Miki Pusztai. But the Wolverines can now say a bunch of hellos. Five new freshman - Henry Beam, Jeronie Barnes, Ben Cox, Danny McCain and Chris Schultz - along with sophomore Ron Nano, join the Michigan squad that will begin competition at the end of this month. The Wolverines begin their latest cam- paign with three months of individual- based tournaments, lasting from late September through January, with a month- long break in December. Assistant coach Dan Goldberg said that these tournaments are vital to "give the players a chance to play a lot of matches." The Wolverines hope to repeat last sea- son's dominance of the fall tournaments, which helps the team prepare for the vigor- ous season that begins in February. "Every competition we had, our perfor- mance was the best of probably any team in the tournaments," Eisner said. "This fall will be very critical because there are very easily five Big Ten teams in the Top 25." Seniors Will Farah and Jake Raiton will lead the bunch, along with juniors John Long, Matt Wright and Brad McFarlane. But five players can't make up a team, and coach Brian Eisner responded by bring- ing in six players - the biggest incoming class of the decade. Danny McCain, who hails from Largo, Fla., blasted through the summer tourna- ments. McCain won the doubles bracket of the National Indoors and was ranked No. 20 in the country as a junior. He won back-to- back Florida state high school titles the past two years. "He comes in with incredible creden- tials," Eisner said. Ben Cox had what Eisner calls "a tremendous tournament" this summer. At the Western Closed Championships in Kalamazoo, Cox won the singles bracket without the loss of a set. Eisner found out that once Cox gets into a rhythm, he's hard to break. "The explosive ability of Ben's game is incredible," Eisner said. "Once he's got his game going, he's hard to beat." Henry Beam Jr. also had an admirable summer. He took fourth in the singles bracket of the Western Closed Championships, and won four singles matches at the National Hardcourt Championships. "There have been many good players from Kalamazoo," Eisner said. "He won four matches, which is the most matches won from any player out of Kalamazoo. Beam can also be called the 'giant' of the squad at 6-foot-6, the tallest player on the team by far. Chris Schultz has a little tougher road ahead of him. Unlike past years, only three out of the five freshman are on scholarship. Schultz hails from East Lansing and was the Division II state champion as a senior. Still, he is keeping his goals simple. "My goal is to play tennis and get good grades," Schultz said. 0 Jeronie Barnes, like Schultz, also has the tougher road as a non-scholarship play- er. But Eisner likes the fact that he has greater options with five new freshmen. "They bring a lot of energy and enthusi- asm to the team," he said. "We will have a nice blend of players to work with." Michigan's fall season begins in late September when Eisner will send a few of the freshman to the Western Michigan Invitational. }i v T-SHIRT PRINTING * LOWESTPRICES! The squad lost four of its top players to graduation and now imports six new players. Here are Eisner's comments on a few of them. On freshman Ben Cox: He played 'a tremendous tournament" this summer. mThe explosive ability of Ben's game is incredible. Once he's got his game going he's hard to beat." On freshman Henry Beam's pertonnance at the Nationa Hardcourt Championships: Esner "There have been many good players from Kalamazoo. He won fourmatches, which is the most matches won from any player out of Kalamazo.' With senior David Paradzik - as well as three others - lost to graduation, Micigan coach Brian Elm has the daunting task of rebuilding his team with mostly freshmen. Hoping to lead the new Wolverines this year will be seniors Will Farah and Jake Ralton. I .. ...r. ®®.0 . The Wolverines are limited in experi- ence this season with just two upper- classmen - senior captain Sharonr and junior Tera Hamo. Michigan 1 Kathy Teichert said she is counting Park and Hamo to set the example fo the younger team members; she is rely ing on their experience to car Michigan through the season, she said. "I expect Sharon, as the captain, t show alot of leadership - we need he to lead by example by posting 1 scores," Teichert said. "She is ver accomplished and has an exception short game andshe can show the frh man how finesse is extremely i r tans. Park could conceivably be a con tender for a Big Ten championship. Fo the past two years, she has bee Michigan's best golfer, and last yea averaged 78.42 per round. "I do not know how good of a lea I can be, but ILam definitely going to tr my best," Park said. "We're one team no one person sticks out, but ifmy e rience will help, or I can help suppor the players or the coach, I will." Teichert still has not decided on the final roster for the team, nor has she selected who will be traveling te Michigan State this weekend to compe in the Spartan Invitational. "The longer we are able to practice the more we will be able to learn abo each of the individual players," Teich said. "I cannot even say right now whc is in the top five, so there is aslot or vousness among the players' At this point, Michigan's greatos advantage with a new team is that it Ca let go of the disapmointments of last sea- son and focus on a new beginning. "All the new faces allow us to make a fresh start," Park said. "The coach is ta- ing the time to recruit really good play- ers, and hopefully soon we will be ab to find agood set of five or six to ea and put (Michigan's) name bac 1l1 there.' Teichert said that the loss of the tw seniors from last year - Nicole Gree and Laura Hess - can be made up is part by the freshmen because it will make the team more competitive and everyone will try to step up their games, "The players are all so strong and very competitive. They have great work ethic and desire - they want to push themselves, which is definitely go fo the team,"Teichert said. W Some of the freshman that could prove helpful to the Wolverines are Lindsey Mammel, Misia Lemanski Bess Bowers, LeAnna Wicks, Courtney Reno, Stephanie Bezilla, Jennifei Pollock and Stephanie MacAdams. "It's true that with new faces coe inexperience, but if they adjust quickly from high school golfto college golf, we should be okay,"Park said. access. 1100.00 #25-503 30 feet of stranded; speaker wire Plenty of length to hook 1p1your dream system.; 9 #278-1107 Microcassette recorder Great for when your mind wanders in class. 49.99 #14-1164 Spelling checker. #3-930 15.99 50-pack discs. #26-494, Free after rebate. o°KPortable cassette mic. #33-2001, 9.99 Microcassette tape. #44-639, 14.99 9-ft. extension cord. #61-2746, 2.39 Multimedia speakers. #40-1404, 29.99 Flashlight combo. #61-880, 11.99 Surge protector. #61-2220, 49.99 4-mailbox answerer. #43-5813,89.99 FREE LONG DISTANCE!
