At least the Wolverines can take consolation that its senior co-cap- tains, Amy Philbrook and Loveita Wilkinson, were selected to represent Michigan against the nation's best in the Division I North/South Field Hockey All-Star Game, tomorrow, as part of field hockey's Final Four weekend. "It's a great honor for them to rep- resent Michigan," Michigan coach Marcia Pankratz said. "They were great leaders for us this year, and they' put their heart and soul into every- thing this season." With the exception of those who will be playing in the Final Four, Michigan's captains will be partici- pating with the nation's top field hoc key seniors. Needless to say, the level of competition will be extreme- ly high. Pankratz said that experts from the cast coast, where field hockey's tradi- tional "powerhouses" reside, may be biased against the accomplishments of her team and her players. But she, doesn't buy it. "I think Loveita and Amy can pla with anybody in the country Pankratz said. Philbrook and Wilkinson's creden- tials back up their coach's statement - both were named first-team regional All-Americans and both have legitimate shots at making the national All-America team. Wilkinson, who is from New Castle, Del., is looking forward to making the trip back toward horne ty play one more field hockey game. "I'm glad I'm going back home. It's going to be a good break for me," Wilkinson said. "I'm more interested in the team. I'd much rather have gone to the NCAAs. I just hope I can show som'e people that wc belonged." Pankratz is proud of the job her captains did this year. "They always came to play and always played harder than everyone," Pankratz said. "They will be missed." I Women tread Penn State waters DAILY SPORTS. WE GOT GRIESE. t Jon Zemke aily Sports Writer It's a common belief that some- times an immediate sacrifice is nec- essary for success in the long run. This has been the philosophy of the Michigan Women's swimming team this season. Michigan coach Jim Richardson planned to train his swimmers and divers in preparation for the upcom- ing winter season and not worry *out the less important fall season '7al meets. So when the Wolverines travel to State College to take on Penn State tomorrow at 4 p.m., Michigan might not compete at full strength. The Nittany Lions face their third Big Ten opponent of the season as the .Wolverines try to stay undefeat- ed. . But the Nittany Lions are also defeated in the Big Ten after an easy victory over Michigan State, 149-93, in their home and season opener. Coming off a loss to upstart Villanova (173.5-126.5), Penn State watched its 31-meet winning streak against non-conference opponents, which stretched as far back as 1993, deep-six. The loss was the first for Penn te in the series after 10 consecu- e yictories over the Wildcats. The Nittany Lions were without twiif their top swimmers. With the Wolverines trailing 36-32 early in the second half, Vignier nailed a .3-foter -long range for the 6-foot-10 junior - to tie the game. After a three- point play by Bullock, Vignier tipped in misses by Leon Jones on two straight trps: down the floor, scoring eight of Michigan's I1 unanswered points. Michigan led, 43-36, the largest advan- &e by either team to that point. "Pete just competed tonight," Ellerbe said. "He made up his mind and said ,'1m going to play as hard as I can for as long as I can."' Michigan senior Jen Eberwien was also a member of the relay team. Adams took fifth place in the 400 free (4:32.17) and 13th in the 100 free (1:00.22). Eberwien took sixth place and sophomore Jen Crisman took 11 th as both swimmers finished under a minute in the 100 free. In the 800 free Anderson took fifth with a time of 9:08.36, which was second among all Big Ten competi- tors. She also swam a 2:11.54 in the 200 free, earning her sixth place overall. Michigan freshman Kerriane Kalbko finnished the race in seventh place behind Anderson with a time of 2:11.83. Penn State is also adjusting to new head coach Bill Dorenkott, who replaced legendary Bob Krimmel last June. Dorenkott, an assistant for three years in Penn State's men's Vignier and Asselin, who combined for 23 points and 19 rebounds, picked the right game to shake out the cobwebs that had affected them in the previous losses. When Bullock picked up his third foul and sat out the final eight minutes of the first half, Michigan was forced to rely on their size advantage over the Titans. And that they did, as Vignier, Asselin and Chris Young harassed the Detroit post players - who average 6-7 - blocking seven shots and altering many others. "I knew it would be a battle in the backcourt," Detroit coach Perry Watson said of the team's relative standoff on the perimeter. "The difference was that their post players played better than ours tonight." Despite Michigan's interior domi- nance, the Titans clawed their way back from Michigan's run, cutting the lead to 53-49 with 3:23 remaining. But Bullock fought out of a double team to find an open Brandon Smith, who nailed a 15-footer as the shot clock expired, ending Detroit's comeback bid. swimming program, was instrumen- tal in that team's rise to prominence in the Big Ten. One person who has not had any problems adjusting to Dorenkott is junior diver Jamie Jaax. She is undefeated in the one and three-meter diving events this year. Jaax returned to the lineup this sea- son after recovering from double shoulder reconstruction surgery last year. Also a big worry for the Wolverines will be Penn State junior Kelli Kane, who took first in the 100 backstroke against Villanova, and freshman Lindsay Fraschilla, who won the 100 breaststroke. The Nittany Lions hope by defeat- ing Michigan, the defending Big Ten champs, they'll return to their win- ning ways. But Penn State has yet to defeat the Wolverines in the past four years.
