You might also want to consider how many, and what kinds, of attractive people will be in the class. Just a suggestion. Best Pickup Line: "Nice shoes. Let's fuck." These days no one likes to play games. So why beat around the bush? If you're going to go down that road eventually, you might as well get out your plans from the jump! Best Rejection Line: "No." Again, as no one likes to play games, rejections these days are blunt, quick and to the point. Yet they linger in the ego for hours or days, depending on how drunk one is at the time. Best Place for a First Date: The Arb The best dates are the ones that cost the least amount of money, but give the best effect. The Arb offers the best of both worlds: It's free and romantic, and the natural suroundings bring out the animal instincts in us all. Best Secret Rendezvous: The Arb Do you belong on Jerry Springer? If you don't want your significant other to know you're cheating, set up a secret meeting in the Arb. Best of Books - Continued Biggest Letdown of a Reading: Richard Ford Sure, he's an amazing writer and he won a Pulitzer. But when the author of "Independence Day" and "Women and Men" came to read with the Visiting Writers Series in March, there was just not much to cheer for. Most Surprising Reading: Marge Piercy The political activists at the January reading showed how large an effect one person's writing can have, especially on as sensitive an issue as abortion. Piercy's reading produced a very emotional response among the audience, who very quickly became personally connected to her situation. Best Non-Literary Literary Event: Michael Moore Political activist, comedian., filmmaker and author of "Downsize This!", Moore drew a large crowd when he visited the Michigan Theater one Friday evening in September. Watch out, you rich capitalist pigs. Moore will always try to stop you. Most Overlooked Reading: Jonathan Lethem When the author of "As She Climbed Across the Table" "Gun, with occasion- al music" and "Girl in Landscape" read at Borders in March, he drew a crowd ... but it should have been much larger. Reading That Just Made You Feel Good: Art Spiegelman The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Maus" was at Shaman Drum in October to read from his children's book, "Open Me ... I'm a Dog!" The reading had the audience smiling all the way through. from the leash to the fuzzy back cover. Best Author to Ever Come Out of Ann Arbor: Arthur Miller Of course. Does any more really need to be said ? Most Intriguing Literary Phenomenon: The Anti-Daily Publications This isn't exclusively the Anti-Daily per se, but all of the student-produced humor and literary flyers circulating around campus. Although they mildly stretch the definition of a "literary phenomenon," the concept is fascinating, and the final product is often well-w ritten and hilarious. - Compiled by Daily Books Editor Jessica Eaton.
