2$ The Michigan .aily Best o np Arbor 1998 - Thursday,Aril 16, .1998. 0 The Michigan Daily Best of Ann Arbor 199 Best of TV/New Media 'Dawson's Creek,' 'South Park' top Daily's Best of Television rankings Most Inexplicably Successful TV Show: "Lateline" While not quite a hit, "Lateline" with Al Franken should rightfully have died. Quite honestly, Franken's satiric and intelligent political humor are wasted in his role as the buffoonish news correspondent Al Freundlich, and what's worse is that he really can't pull off the role. Yet, somehow, people are still watching. In all fairness, the "Buddy Hackett" episode was funny, but the focus of the show had been taken off Freundlich. Most Rightfully Successful TV Show: "Dawson's Creek" They're supposed to be 15-year- olds living outside of Boston who are facing the real problems that all ado- lescents face at that age. But in actuality, the youngest of them is 17, the show is shot in North Carolina and we all wish our lives were this damn interesting in col- lege, let alone in high school. The reason for the success of "Dawson's Creek": its melodrama doesn't look cheap. Beautiful people talk articulately in a picture-perfect setting. It also doesn't hurt topic of conversation on the almost invariably sex. that the show is Courtesy of Warner Bros. The teenage stars of "Dawson's Creek" have made It a popular show. Computer Character who Represents Every Heterosexual Male Adolescent's Dream Girl: Lara Croft If there was any question what the demographics were for people who play video games, the bodacious, unnaturally perky Lara Croft from "Tomb Raider I" and "II" has settled it. Croft is designed to appeal to the teenage boys who make up the largest group of video-game con- sumers, and the success of the "Tomb Raider" series" illustrates the effectiveness of this marketing idea. In reality, Croft would be too off- balance to perform the acrobatics she does, and she's probably making Pamela Anderson Lee jealous. Not that any heterosexual male is com- plaining. Most Gratuitous "Suspenseful" Plot Twist: "The X-Files" Special Agent Fox Mulder appar- ently committed suicide in the final episode of "The X-Files"'fourth sea- son ... but guess who made a sur- prise return in the fall. Did anyone actually believe that the popular series would kill off one of its stars when both of them are slated to take part in the "X-Files" movie this sum- mer? Even more puzzling, the top-rated show certainly didn't need to use this ploy as a ratings boost. Perhaps the truth about this plot device is out there, too. Best Reason to Get Cable: "From the Earth to the Moon" HBO's "From the Earth to the Moon" will almost certainly be available on videocassette to own, and with good reason. This miniseries, or series, depend- ing on who you're talking to, gives one an idea about the magnitude of America's endeavor to outrace the Russians to the moon. Even if it doesn't meet the Emmy's standards for a miniseries, since "From the Earth to the Moon" has a different director for each episode, Tom Hanks' creation probably could contend with "The X-Files," "ER" and "NYPD Blue" for best television series. ~ U .
