i LoCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily - Friday, January 16, 1998 - 7 Iedical School forum looks at diversity in health care industry Speakers encourage Medical dents to face challenges nd be persistent in working oward career goals y Susan T. Port aily Staff Reporter In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s irthday, the University Medical School and ifice of Admissions hosted an academic rum yesterday to inform students about the ortance of diversity in the medical com- Snity. The presentation consisted of two keynote )eakers - Carol Bennett, who did her residen- r in Ann Arbor, and Keith Black, who is a grad- tte of the University's Inteflex Program. The :cond hour was filled with stories told by a iriety of panelists. Bennett said there is a need for minorities to be represented in the student body. "We all contribute to the fabric of this com- munity. We all must be represented," Bennett said. "Both majority and minority citizens pay taxes to support the public institutions. I want to see people (like) myself be represented in insti- tutions of higher education.' Medical first-year student Kelly McLean said the more students who are exposed to a diverse student body, the more effectively they can deal with real-life situations. "I have become more aware,' McLean said. "You first see them as a person opposed to being African American or Jewish.' Bennett pointed out that the advocacy and hard work of minority groups has helped devel- op progressive research in breast cancer and prostate cancer. Black encouraged students not to let chal- lenges and adversity discourage them from fol- lowing their goals. "The fact that nine doors are closed for every one door that is opened never stopped me,' Black said. "Be persistent. Be very aggressive about what you want to do in life." Medical first-year student Adrienne Moore said diversity is very important in the Medical School. Moore said it was encourag- ing to listen to others who were not discour- aged by the many challenges they faced as minorities. "I am personally trying to increase the num- ber of students at the Medical School," she said. Black advised audience members to find a mentor they can look up to and be "a guiding spirit" to those students who will follow in their footsteps. "I had the chance to have another African American physician really tell me what it was like to be an African American faculty mem- ber at the University of Michigan," Black said. "It's really a matter of taking your PAUL TALANAN/Daly Keith Black, director of Cedars-Sinai Neurosurgical Institute, and Carol Bennett, an associate surgery professor at UCLA, spoke last night at the Medical School at a symposium on diversity. adversity and turning it into something posi- tive." University pathology Prof. Gerald Abrams said that after 40 years at the University, he has experienced firsthand the need to increase minority members within the student body and faculty. "The physicians we train are going to deal with a diverse population,' Abrams said. "The faculty members have an obligation to meet the needs of the community." LSA first-year student Leticia Addai said she found the forum very informative. "It's more encouraging to hear people who have gone through some struggles but have suc- ceeded," Addai said. -L NN ARBOR CO.
