LOCAL/S TATE The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, April 15, 1998 - 7 UIERGERS Continued from Page 1. for employer relations, said investment banking is the second highest field of interest at CP&P, with 400 of 1,200 students registered to use the career center's services that list it as a field of interest. She said commercial banking is also a pop- ular career choice. The School of Business and Administration's Office of Career Development reports that almost 281 students, one third of all graduates, entered banking and financial services in 1997. * SA senior Vijay Jayaraman said he considered the effects a potential merger before accepting a job offer from Goldman Sachs, a privately owned investment bank. "Rumors were flying around about (the possibility of a firm purchasing) Goldman, but I was assured they were not true,' Jayaraman said. "There's always that concern because these kind of things, like the mergers this week, can just pop out of the blue." Brophy said he expects the merger wave to continue, and said the national focus of the merged banks will make oppor- tunities available for small, specialized financial services firms to fill niches in more localized geographic markets. You'll see new regional investment" and commercial bnks, Brophy said. "Students would be well advised to look locally and regionally as well as nationally for work." Finance Prof. Nejat Seyhun said the goal of the past week's mergers was not to cut jobs, but to capitalize on new cost advantages made possible by technology. "The optimal size of the bank is getting bigger" Seyhun said. "The idea (behind the mergers) is not to eliminate oper- ations ... it's more to combine technology and take advantage of economies of scale. Citigroup can, for example, sell insur- ance out of bank offices." Seyhun said that although "size doesn't guarantee sc- cess' he believes the country's 10,000 banks will be repwced through mergers by approximately 10 national banks. Seyhun said cost savings may lead to lower fees for consumer ser- vices such as checking. The mergers are "good for the banks, and not bad for con- sumers,' Seyhun said. "If more banks (decide to merge), banks in competition with each other may drive prices for services downward." Brophy said the mergers will open possibilities for banks to enter new markets and may make it easier for students wishing to start a small business to secure loans. Banks "might be able to go into markets they weren't able to go into before - like (loans to) small businesses - because they will have more available capital and more elab- orate portfolio investment strategies," Brophy said. MSA Continued from Page 1 were ineffective and inefficient. They just didn't deliver on their promises" Olson said the student government should organize its own signature-gath- ering campaign because the industry itself could not match the activism of students. "Students as citizens are the most activist and easiest to organize," Olson said. "The student government should be able to put together a signature drive." Before MSA can allocate the money to their political campaign, they must convince the regents to approve the fee increase - a move many insiders say is unlikely because the board does not want to dilute its power. "I think it's apparent that (the regents) don't want a student regent," said LSA Rep. Brian Reich, a first-year student. "It's highly unlikely that they "students as citizens are the most activist and easiest to organize" - Blois Olson Press Secretary for Doug Ross for Governor will approve the funding increase, which is disappointing because I believe that they should leave it up to the voters of the state." Regent Philip Power (D-Ann Arbor) said he is against the idea of a student regent because once such a position is created, other constituencies such as faculty and staff will want representa- tion on the board. "In general, I've felt that a student regent is not a very good idea," Power said. "If you begin regental representa- tion by constituency, there's no end to the number of positions created. I feel that regents should represent the whole state." A complaint filed by students of the University's Law School also threatens to undermine the push for a student regent. The letter of complaint, which has been received by Michigan's Secretary of State Candice Miller and has yet to be reviewed, alleges that MSA violated the Michigan Campaign Finance Act, which prohibits public funds from being used for political campaigns. "We will review the complaint on its face," said Elizabeth Boyd, communica- tions director for Miller. "We can either dismiss the complaint without prejudice if it is apparent that it was without grounds, or we can seek additional infor- mation that can help us determine whether a violation has occurred." m F MP STAFF- Outstanding, accredited Down Camp on modem college cam- > mes in Mass. and Penn., seeks students and >rofessionals interested in fitness and fun!
