LOCAL/STATEThe Michigan Daily - Wednesday, April 8, 19 Students, investors benefit from for-profit schools 998-7 e Baltimore Sun They might not have the cachet of Stanford, Princeton or 'ale, but for-profit schools can make investors look like ley've earned a Harvard MBA. Strayer Education Inc., Scholastic Corp., Computer earning Centers Inc. and DeVry Inc. have become sizzling s in a young, fast-growing industry. These schools are not for kids who want to live on campus nd play intramural sports; they are geared toward students ho have jobs and want to earn a technical, college or grad- ate degree in business or the medical or computer profes- ions. "You almost have to own this business," said Scott Soffen, education analyst at Legg Mason Wood Walker Inc. in Baltimore. "It makes up such a huge portion of the economy and where it is going, you just have to be in there." What makes Soffen so bullish on for-profit education com- panies? The business is huge. About $600 billion, or 9 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product, is spent on education each year. That's more than double the money spent on defense, but shy of the $900 billion spent on health care. And Soffen sees for- profit schools gaining a larger share of the education pie. Demand for education and technical training is growing and the number of for-profit providers is limited. The popu- lation of 18- to 24-year-olds, which is the primary market for these schools, is expected to reach 28.5 million over the next eight years. Military cutbacks are also likely to increase the number of potential students. Jobs are continuing to shift to information and technology from traditional manufacturing. "If you are going to be successful in this world, you can no longer just graduate from high school and work in the local factory," Soffen said. "You still have a large portion of high school students who graduate and work at McDonald's. All of a sudden, they wake up and say: 'Gosh, I have to make some money."' Education can be exported. Computer Learning Centers recently acquired a university in Canada, and EduTrek International has opened campuses overseas. "This is one of those industries that America is the best at;' Soffen said. The sector should be able to withstand downturns in the economy. Soffen believes that in tough economic times, people who lose jobs often go back to school for training and further edu- cation.
