LOCAL/S TATE The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, March 25, 1998 -? BANTER Continued from Page 1 lion in class discussion and beyond is part of his teaching philosophy. "I don't give sermons on the .mount," Tanter said. "Acquisition and dissemination of knowledge are two sides of the same coin. "Students are not pawns in my class," Tanter said. During his 31-year career working ith students, Tanter has taken just one break - a four-year hiatus to serve as a senior staff member on Reagan's National Security Council. "I outranked Oliver North. He !would do anything. I always saw him in front of the shredder," Tanter joked. Tanter said he was replaced by North, the central figure in the arms for hostages scandal in the 1980s, for Reagan's second term. "They sent me back to Michigan," Tanter said. Tanter's book discusses the six rogue states he believes are the most threatening to the United States today: Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lybia, Cuba and North Korea. The current situation regarding Iraqi weapons inspections is not the most dangerous threat to American sovereignty at this time, Tanter argues. "Saddam (Hussein) invaded Kuwait, so people know him; he goes above the fold," Tanter said. "But he can be handled." Tanter argues in the book that Iran is the more dangerous of these two states. "Iran is a more dangerous threat, but only the U.S. sees the threat. No one is paying attention to this," Tanter said. Syria and its leader Hafez Al- Assad are also an important players in the world political game today, Tanter said. "Assad killed 12,000 of his own people in a weekend," Tanter said. Syria "deserves categorization as a rogue state and it deserves publica- tion." Tanter held a book signing last night at Borders Books & Music, where some people questioned his views on U.S. policy toward these and other nations. But Tanter defended his book, saying, "American ideals are the most important factor in military interven- tion abroad." Daily, Ensian take home awards AWARDS Continued from Page 1 former Daily Mnaging News Editor Jodi S. Cohen received the award on behalf of the Daily's staff at a ceremony in New York's Marriott Marquis Hotel on Thursday. Michiganensian Editor Ryan Sockalosky and former Michiganensian Editor Lisa Harty received the yearbook's award on behalf of their staff. "This is a great honor for botn publications and is a reflection of the strength of the student editors and reporters at both the Daily and the Ensian,' White said. "There is no way that either publication could have achieved this without so many talented students working tirelessly in all aspects of newspaper and yearbook production. "Each and every student who has worked in Student: Publications earned these awards." In addition to the Gold Crown, Daily staff members also won 17 Gold Circle Awards, one of the most esteemed awards given to collegiate newspaper reporters. The Daily took four first-place awards nationally for: News Writing, Sports Features, Entertainment Review and Art Illustration. Daily staffers also finished second in In-Depth News/Feature, Health News, Spot News Photo and Sports Photo Portfolio, and the staff was honored with third place in the Single Subject Presentation Section category for its Sept. 23 special edition, which covered the Tamara Williams murder. The Daily was also named the fourth-best designed col- lege newspaper in the country. ontinued from Page 1. hazard or impediments, it isn't really public funds - it's 'private," he said. Elias said he regrets this "miscommunication" but that he looks forward to meeting with the students to discuss the issue. LSA junior Andrew Wright, co-chair of the Student Regents Task Force, said MSA has managed to avoid the legal questions surrounding their political effort to get a stu- ent regent by making the fee refundable. "Our position is that the only standing they have is if (students) are forced to pay the fee," Wright said. "We feel very confident that we are not usurping student power." The students who are challenging the initiative said that whether or not the fee is optional is irrelevant. "If one student gave their money (to MSA), it would still be illegal," Hanna said. "The issue is a public body is spending money for a political issue. Though the funding is coming from a specific source, it's still a pub- lic body." Law first-year student Charles Keckler said that the stu- dents are putting together their arguments because they "noticed something odd." "Our current reading of the law makes it look like some- thing not appropriate is going on," Keckler said. Several legal advisers who were contacted concerning the question of what constitutes public funds said they could not comment without knowing the specifics of the students' chal- lenge.
