Serve it up, kiddies! Students cash in on waiting tables
A weekly ?uide to who's Th"L s
where, what s happening and
why you need to be there..v
By Diana Grossman
For the Daily
So here we are in the noble pursuit of higher
education with the hope that we will one day be
taken seriously in the competitive job market.
Besides sucking up all of our time, this endeavor
also seems to suck up all of our funds. Books,
tuition, room and board, and the occasional "I
must have a hole in my pocket" night at the bar are
only a few of the things that leave us high and dry.
So what is a college kid to do? Time is
always a concern, so many students in need of
some cash are forced to give up precious
Friday and Saturday nights so as not to
infringe upon study time. Hence, waiting
tables has become one of the most popular
undergraduate jobs on campus.
We have all heard the rumors: fast cash, hard
work and long hours. But what is the real scoop
on waiting tables in Ann Arbor?
LSA senior Steven Ellis has been working as
a server at Thano's Lamplighter for the past five
months. "Waiting (tables) is a great way to make
fast cash," Ellis said, "but one must understand.
that it is a physically demanding job."
RC sophomore Sarah Murro agreed.
"Waiting tables is a good way to make a lot of
money, but it is extremely hard work:'
Outsiders may ask themselves what makes
waiting tables so difficult - after all, it's not
brain surgery.
LSA senior Rachel Pepe, who has been
employed by Good Time Charley's for the past
year and a half, explained why waitressing
takes such a toll:
