LOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily - Thursday, March 19, 1998 - TA TEFLEX ontinued from Page 1A What does need to be done, Steneck said, is to evaluate the needs of non-Inteflex students and determine how to accommodate them. "I think that there is every reason to look at the academic needs of pre-medical and pre-health care students in LSA," Steneck said. Steneck said it is too early to tell if the way to complish all of the goals is to terminate the eflex program. Holtzman said other pre-medical students at the University need to receive the same caliber of acade- mics that Inteflex students receive. He said he is unsure of how the University can accomplish this. "If I thought the program should be eliminated, I would have no business being in it right now," 1oltzman said. "I would be a hypocrite." Inteflex first-year student Alice Han said although she is not familiar with the problems surrounding pre-medical education, she does not see how elimi- ng the Inteflex program will alleviate them. "The experience is so good, I can't imagine taking that away from other people when it really isn't going to help," Han said. Han said non-Inteflex pre-medical students would not benefit greatly from the removal of the Inteflex program. "You can help the pre-med students, but terminat- ing the Inteflex program won't make a significant difference;' she said. Burdi said the program has undergone changes in the past to meet new demands. Inteflex began in 1972 as a six-year program to educate qualified physicians in a shorter period of time. After chang- ing to seven-year program, Inteflex became an eight- year program in 1992. "The bottom line is that over the years, Inteflex has changed to meet different demands of the time" Burdi said. Burdi said the committee to review the program has not yet been formed. Regardless of the program's fate, Burdi said, stu- dents who currently are enrolled in the program will continue to be educated within Inteflex. FUNDING Continued from Page 1A "This is very good news for students and their families," he said. State Sen. Jon Cisky (R-Saginaw) said that although his committee's proposal exceeds the governor's plan by nearly $32 million, there will be funds available to support the increase. "Three percent is realistic and I think it is appropriate," Cisky said. "We think this money will be available." Schwarz agreed that "we believe we have identified reliable funding." But Engler spokesperson John Truscott warned there may not be any extra revenue avail- able for the increase, and something will have to be cut if this funding is to be approved. "We have always said that if they're going to add more money in one place, they have to tell us where they're going to cut," Truscott said. Sen. Alma Wheeler Smith (D-Salem Twp.) said she agrees with the funding increase, but that finding room in the budget for the funding could be a struggle. "I think the increase in funding is a step in the right direction," said Smith, a member of the Appropriations Committee. But Smith asked, "How are we going to pay for $32 million over the governor's proposal?" The committee is planning to use any increase in revenue the state announces in May for high- er education, Smith said. "If we have additional funding in May, then we won't have a problem," Smith said. But Truscott said the committee "shouldn't be making decisions" based on revenue the state does not have. Members of the committee heard testimony from public college and university presidents who said Engler's proposal could cause a large increase in tuition. "We can't expect tuition to be restrained if we don't provide the money need to run the univer- sities," Cisky said. Harrison said the appropriation will help keep tuition down. "Clearly, the higher the appropriation, the lower we can keep tuition," Harrison said. But Harrison also said it is still early in the appropriations process, and a final deal is "a long way away." Once a version of the bill is approved by the Senate, it will move to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education, the House Appropriations Committee and the House floor. The committee, in addition to giving a 3-per- cent increase across the board, raised the per-stu- dent funding floor to $4,300 for all public uni- versities. This translated into increases above 3 percent for six schools: Central Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, Oakland University, Saginaw Valley State University, and the University of Michigan's Flint and Dearborn campuses. "This treatment equalizes the ability of all schools to provide programs for students" Smith said. A.M.
