University could suffer a similar
decrease if the anti-affirmative action
lawsuits facing the University's College
of Literature, Science and the Arts and
Law School are successful.
"I think, to repeat what has been
said before, the effects in California
and Texas are very clear, and we
don't want to sec this happen in
Michigan," Baker said. "That's why
we're doing everything we can to
defend ourselves against the law-
suits. We have to do everything we
can to make sure that access is main-
tained."
Richard Backer, assistant vice chan-
cellor for enrollment services at UC-
San Diego, said that the university was
not surprised by the drop because it had
conducted post-Prop. 209 simulations
that predicted almost exactly the

a

decline in minority acceptances.
"We expected the drop, so they
were nit unanticipated," Backer said.
"The simulations were almost on the
money. We had known that the num-
bers would drop as precipitously as
they did."
UC-San Diego reported the largest
drop in minority admissions among
the three schools, with a 46 percent
drop in black admissions and a 31 per-
cent drop in latino/a admissions. The
number of blacks admitted to UC-
Irvine dropped 19 percent and latino/a
admissions fell 9 percent. At the UC-
Davis, black admissions dropped 36
percent, and latino/a admissions
dropped 20 percent.
Backer said that while the universi-
ty is disappointed with the figures,
there are positive aspects of this
year's incoming class. UC-San Diego
received a record-high 28,000 appli-
cations, and the, average high school

grade point average of those admitted
was 3.99. according to the UC
method that recalculates applicants'
GPAs. Average SAT scores also rose
by 19 points.
"We're certainly disappointed in the
numbers and we're going to take what-
ever aggressive steps to convert the
admitted students to enrolled students,"
Backer said. "But the good news in the
numbers is that this is the most acade-
mically talented class we've ever admit-
ted."
Lightfoot said that because the
decreases were expected, the University
of California system has already started
programs to make up for the schools'
inability to use affirmative action in the
adiissions process.
"1 think there was an expectation that
there would be a drop following
changes in our policy," Lightfoot said.
"Outreach programs, which are based
primarily on improving the K-12 educa-

tion that a majority of African
American and latino/a students receive
before they apply, are definitely a key
component."
Despite these drops, UC-Riverside
and UC-Santa Cruz reported increases
in minority acceptances. Lightfoot
attributes this to differences in the cam-
puses' admissions requirements com-
pared to UC-Davis, UC-lrvine and UC-
San Diego.
"They primarily differ because of
the number of students who apply and
their ability," Lightfoot said.
"Everyone who had applied to (these
two schools) were eligible. Therefore,
they were able to take all of the stu-
dents. The number of students who
had applied were equal to the avail-
ability of slots."
Among the eight UC campuses, UC-
erkeley, UCLA and UC-Santa Barbara
have not yet released their admissions
figures.

D~ethroned 4
BOULDER, Colo. - Pageant
officials were proud when Regina
Flores became the first Hispanic to
be crowned MIiss Colorado. They
said the multilingual beauty had the
talent and poise to become Miss
America.
Six months later, things have gotten
ugly.
Flores was stripped of the crown in a
dispute over her public appearances, a
furor that has led to allegations of
racism. The beauty queen, who finished
out of the running at the Miss America
pageant in September, is now suing to
get her crown back.
"It probably would have been a lot
easier for me if I just went quietly, and
I'm sure that's what they wanted me to
do,' she said. "But I know what they

V
did was wrong and I wasn't goin' to
stand for it, especially wxheni I,-o into
classrooms and I tell kids all the time
never to give up and to go for their
dreams. I would be a hypocrite if!I gave
up.
Pageant officials dethroned Flores
in December because, they said. she
booked her own appearances, missed
appearances and took a part-time job
at a department store without
approval.
"This contract is as serios as
someone signing a contract to buy a
house or lease an apartment. It only
takes one violation," pageant director
Vonnie Pederson said. "We don't have
time to spend bickering and arguing.
We absolutely could not do it any-
more."
