Vernon Ehlers, a for- mer state senator from Grand Rapids, said the issue really should be dealt with at the federal level. He has introduced two bills that he hopes to have passed by April. The first bans all human cloning in the United States, while the other for- bids research on human cloning and bans federal money from being spent on it. "If the federal government doesn't act, it's very useful for the states to act. But it's better for the federal govern- ment to deal with this issue simply because otherwise someone can just cross the state line," Ehlers said yester- day. State Rep. Kirk Profit, (D-Ypsiltnti). said he doesn't want to wait for the fed- eral ban. lie hopes his bill, up for a hearing before the House Health Policy Committee on Jan. 20, will be in pace banning human cloning in Michigan much sooner than that. Profit's legislation would create a $10 million penalty for anyone who clones or attempts to clone a human being in Michigan. House Health Policy Committee Chair Joseph Pahimara, (D- Wyandotte), also has introduced a bill banning human cloning in Michigan. He said he'll likely ask for a penalty of $100 million to deter the creation of human clones. "I don't think S10 million is enough. How much would Michael Jordan be worth if he was cloned? Hundreds of millions, Palamara said. * Seniors & Grads. SUp to $14/Lecture e Variety of classes " Flexible Schedule f Faculty approved courses Apply at Grade A Notes 549 E. While faculty members said the exact number of clinical teachers, a position that is one step below full-fledged tenured professors,,is unknown, some consider this number to be increasing. Using clinical teachers gives the University a chance to offer these faculty mem- bers a contract for about five to seven years. These short-term contracts can allow University administrators to avoid reviewing clinical teachers for tenure altogeth- er, Bollinger said. Bollinger said clinical teachers are important, especially for seminars, but that tenured faculty members will continue to be the majority of the University faculty. Patrick said parents of the fraternity's members are happy to hear she is guid- ing the house. "Parents and alumni feel easier," she said. Patrick said she plans to remain in her position at the house indefinitely. "It's not just a year for me, it's forev- er," Patrick said. "I look upon this as another career." Singer agreed that Patrick's presence will be welcome at the fraternity for years to come. "It's definitely working out," Singer said. "Beta looks forward to a long rela- tionship with Anne." Singer said the fraternity's decision to hire a house mother may encourage other fraternities to follow in their foot- steps. "Our understanding is that due to our success, other fraternities are interested in pursuing house mothers," Siner said. But not all fraternity members on campus are enthusiastic about the idea. "I don't think we would ever dolit, said Jeff Sieracki, member and former vice president of Phi Kappa Psi. "It's one of the fine differences between fra- ternities and sororities." "if we had someone else here telling us what to do it would be kind of annoy- ing," said Sieracki, an Engineering semor. "The present system is fine the way it is. I UOEM 747-9400 1220 S.
