LOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily - Thursday, February 5, 1998 - 7A &HOPS ntinued from Page 1A work out something like this," Bathish said. Tabitha Treber, an employee who worked at the Cava Java on Main Street and followed the shop to the Union, said the Union is better for the coffee shop atmosphere than its previ- qus location. "We're doing a lot more business over here," Treber said. "People on Main Street thought the store would have sand- wiches and more food products than we do. They were also an older, more business-like crowd that was always on the go. ere the students are more relaxed, coming here to drink cof- ec and study." Some students said they hadn't even noticed the location change. "I like both Cava Java and Amer's, so I would come to either (in the Union)," said LSA senior Kathy Amrose. Rackham students Regine Ostine and Tyrone Forman said it was the convenient location of the Union that brought them to Cava Java, not the name of the shop. "It's local, it's convenient, it's the Michigan Union," said Ostine. "I like the new high chairs," said Forman, adding that he hadn't noticed any other major changes in the menu or ser- vice of the new shop, except an expanded dessert selection. Gabriel Kerr, manager of the Amer's Main Street location, said he has already experienced the advantages of the shop's location. "It was a great move," Kerr said. "We profit off of having a deli on Main (Street) and being able to serve food. In the Union there was too much competition because they were flooded in the basement with all the food places." Ann Arbor resident Dorothy Mcleod said she was happy to see the new Amer's deli open close to her workplace. "Before they didn't have a good selection of things to eat," Mcleod said. "Now this is quick and they have a lot of choices which is great for when you have limited amount of time for lunch." Senate penalizes Stallings LEWIS Continued from Page 1A A sense of permanence will be a *elcome change, said Lewis, who is the fourth Rackham dean in four years, "I will end up talking to even more people in the future since there is a sense of permanence," Lewis said. Lewis was chosen as a finalist by the same committee that recom- mended Cantor to the position of Rackham dean. Cantor was eventu- ally appointed to the position of provost during July of last year. "I think the advantage was that the committee had worked together for a long time ... and had a vision for what the dean should be like," said psycholo- gy and women's studies Prof. Abigail Stewart, who headed the search com- mittee. Stewart said the committee consid- ered both former and current Rackham faculty before making the decision to appoint Lewis. "We wanted someone with knowl- edge and experience of Rackham," Stewart said. "I think the committee was impressed with his leadership of Rackham as interim dean and impressed with his vision for Rackham in the future. "We had a strong, long record of his accomplishments. That was an advantage. He's a very known quan- tity," Stewart added. Stewart said the committee reviewed many of the same candidates as it did during the provost search last year. LANSING (AP) -- Senate leaders took their first official steps yesterday toward penalizing Sen. Henry Stallings for admitting he took more than $100 under false pretenses by using a Senate employee to work in his Detroit art gallery. Stallings, who was stripped of his committee assignments, Detroit office and control of his capital office and staff on Tuesday, faces possible expulsion, among other things, by the Senate. Formal actions taken yesterday included appointment of a special committee to investigate the matter and make recommendations, and the introduction of resolutions to either expel or censor the freshman Democrat. Senate Minority Leader John Cherry (D-Clio) said he expects Stallings to be expelled if he doesn't resign first. "That's what I see," AP PHOTO State Sen. Harry Stallings (D-Detroit), who admitted to taking $100 under false pretenses, works at his desk on the Senate floor in Lansing on Tuesday. Cherry said. Stallings declined to comment on the matter. "I'm not available for comment," he said. "I'll comment, but not today." In the past, he said he will not resign. When asked again yesterday, he made no response. Sen. Willis Bullard (R-Milford), chair of the new special committee, said he hopes the committee will begin meeting within the next couple of weeks. "My only intention is to have hear- ings," Bullard said. "We're going to focus on the plea that Henry entered. "We're all going to be judges. We don't want to come to any conclusion without hearing all the facts. It's a serious situation - whatever we do, it will be (Senate) precedent." 11 =._im COUNSELORS: TOP BOYS SPORTS CAMP in Maine!
