" pas Michigan to stand trial in conference By Dan Stillman Daily Sports Writer This weekend is big for the Michigan basketball team. In fact, it's probably fair to say tonight's game against No. 10 Purdue at Crisler Arena and Sunday's game at No. 16 Iowa constitute the most important two-game stretch for the 19th-ranked Wolverines in a very, very long time. Cavs fir t up for'M'tennis By Mark Francescutti Daily Sports Writer No more tournaments for practice or individual glory. The time has come for the Michigan men's tennis team to come together and finally play matches that count, starting this Sunday at home. The first home competition of the year for No. 42 Michigan and the first dual match of the season begins with a tough com- petitor, No. 31 Virginia. Virginia boasts some tough competition for the Wolvennes. The Cavaliers have top singles and doubles tandems including nationally ranked Hyon Yoo, who came away with a second- place singles showing at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational. *Bear Schofield joins up with Justin Smith to form a doubles team ranked 42nd in the nation. Virginia also gained two new players this season, Huntly Montgomery and Brian Vahaly, who make up the seventh- ranked doubles team for their region. "Virginia's a tough team," senior captain Brook Blain said. "Last year we saw them at a tournament, they had a good team, so were expecting them to come in and have a good match+" The Wolverines might have the experience edge after playing See CAVS Page 14 Sunday No. 19 Michigan at No. 16 Iowa Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa City 2 p.m. TV: CBS stand now in the Big Ten, after .-- - - teams are playing, it's possible to lose one of these two and still win the Big Ten," Traylor said, "But we don't want to put our- selves in that predicament." Also at 5-2 in the conference and tied with the Wolverines for 2nd are Purdue and Illinois. The Hoosiers conme in next $ at 5-3, followed by Iowa (4-3). All this means is that wins over both the Boilermakers and Hawkeyes would put the Wolverines in the driver's seat in the Big Ten race, two losses would be devastating andaspiwol be di tppoing but probably not impossible to recover from. Swimmers look to topple Indiana By Rick Freeman Daily Sports Writer The Michigan men's swimming and diving team will walk into Canham Natatorium Saturday morning to find things just a little different. The scent of chlorine will still hang in the humid air, but the lane markers will be maize and blue instead of white and the usually bare bleachers will be spangled with fans and parents.. For nearly half the team members, this will be the first time they've heard starting bells since early December. "We need to catch up," Michigan coach Jon Urbanchek said, explaining that a series of extra-mural meets, including the 1997 World Championships in Australia, has inter- rupted the Wolverines'training schedule. The split squad meets, the traveling, the hectic schedules; they all come to an end on Saturday. This dual is the first of four conference meets, none of which -requires travel any farther than Columbus. The high noon showdown, as Urbanchek described it, will be the first Big Ten meet for both the seventh- ranked Wolverines and the unranked Hoosiers. It also marks the first taste of competition in more than a month for some of the Wolverines. But half the team is still recovering from their recent jaunt to Texas for the Dallas Morning News Classic - a trip that came on the heels of their trip to the 1997 World Championships in Australia. The swimmers who haven't seen action since December practiced all break, which in this sport means ... well, lots of swimming. And lots of diving, too.
