Inside Cliff Ken Arena, there was a whole lotta shakin' goin' on as -three of the nation's finest gymnastics teams took the 'loor. The No. I1 Michigan men's gymnastics team took third, setting a new team score record with 223.80, behind powerhouses No. 5 Penn State (226.15) and No. Iowa ( 228.40). W"The guys did a real good job getting in against the big boys," Michigan coach Kurt Golder said. "They went elbow to elbow without any intimidation at all." :Holder said the team focused all week on working hard ,tbTun clean, consistent routines for Saturday night. The hard work payed off as five Wolverines recorded person- al bests for the night. f Freshman Kenny Keener scored a 9.60 on the still tAigs with fellow freshmen Chris Peyton (parallel bars, 9.25), Justin Toman (parallel bars, 9,70 and high bar, (00) and junior Randy D'Amura (vault, 9.50) also scor- nig personal records. "The best Michigan performance of the night was turned in by freshman Kevin Roulston. Roulston record- ed three personal bests in the floor exercise (9.60), high -ar(9.45), and vault (9.65). Roulston's scores were good ebdugh to place him first individually in the floor exer- vise. and the vault, and his all. around score of 56.15 arncd him second place behind Iowa's Todd Strada. "Three personal bests is very good, but there is still .reoi for improvement," said Golder of Roulston's per- fbrmance. * -The Wolverines will need lots of improvement if they - hope to survive in the very competitive Big Ten this sea- son:-The conference boasts seven of the nation's top 20 teams in the coaches poll. °Tbis week, the Wolverines will focus on No. 7 Illinois aM.they travel to Champaign on Saturday, but Golder said the ,team's main goal is to prepare for the Big Ten Championships, which will be hosted by Michigan at iCiisler Arena on March 20-21. "The Big Ten is the strongest conference in the coun- try,' Golder said. "It's going to be real tight. Iowa's the avorite and could win it all." Michigan wrestlers convincing in victory. 'M' grapplers show signs of former selves By Jordan Field Daily Spurts Writer At the beginning of the season, the Michigan wrestling team was No. 4 in the nation. But after a poor 3-6 overall and 0-1 Big Ten start, the team slipped in the rankings. So this past weekend the, now No. 15 Wolverines traveled to No. 25 Northwestern and No. II Illinois for the confer- ence dual meets. But Michigan looked more like its old ranking this past weekend. In a convincing manner, the Wolverines returned to Ann Arbor with victories over both teams, and a refreshing 2-1 league record. "I am just really, really happy to turn things around the way we did," Michigan senior Airron Richardson said. "This weekend was really important for our confidence and will hopefully put us in a position to finish the season strong" Against the Wildcats, the Wolverines jumped on the lead quickly with wins by Chris Viola, Joe Warren and Damion Logan in the first three weight classes. Northwestern finally got on the board at 142 pounds, but as All-America Jeff Catrabone pinned Northwestern's Chris Roberts at 167, it seemed Michigan had the match wrapped up. But the Wildcats wouldn't quit - scoring a decision at 177 pounds and a fall at 190 -- cut- ting the Michigan lead to 18-15. Michigan heavyweight Richardson was ready to seal the match, but his services weren't needed as the Wildcats forfeited that class, handing the Wolverines the 24-15 victory. "I understand one of their main guys had a back problem and is out for the season," Richardson said. The match against the Fighting Illini was a lit- tle different. This time Richardson's services were needed. With six of Illinois' starters ranked in the top 10, Michigan had just regained the lead, 16-15, at the 190 weight class where unranked Ryan Balcom upset No. 9 Pat Quirk in overtime, 7-4. It all came down to the heavy- weight match, where No. 2. Richardson was to battle No. 5 Karl Roesler. "Any time the match comes down to my match, I have confidence ... to finish. it off," - Aaron Richardson Michigan senior wrestler "Ryan came through for us. That was really big" Richardson said. "Hopefully, that will give him more confidence for the remainder of the season. That win was critical for him and for us. Tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. Richardson scored a reversal in the tie-breaker, giving him the 4-2 'victory and Michigan the 19-15 victory. "Anytime the match comes down to my match, I have confidence in myself to finish it of'," Richardson said. "I knew we needed that win, and I was comfortable having that in my hands." The two victories weren't the only thing the Wolverines had to smile about this past week- end. Senior Bill Lacure returned to the line-up against Illinois from a rib injury that kept him out for more than a week. Lacure, who is ranked No. 4 at 158, returned with a 6-2 decision that cut into the Illinois six-point lead. "He's one of out best wrestlers and it was great to have him back," Richardson said. Also, Catrabone's fall against Northwestern gave him his 13th of the year, moving him into a tie for ninth all-time in a single season. He only needs four more falls to set the single-season record. The Wolverines now have a week of practice as they get ready to travel to East Lansing to bat- tie Michigan State on Feb. 4, and then come home to face Ohio State and Purdue on Feb. 6 and 7.
