"I think it has to do with the fact that more people care about Martin Luther King's goals and spirit and want to do something about it by making a commit- ment to service,'he said. Kosiorek said the activity also included dialogues between volunteers and individ- ual site leaders. "It was nice to hear what people had to reflect on and how they met so many different people through this event. "It was great to see so many people impacted by this and for such a great cause,' Kosiorek said. In contrast to the veteran status of Project SERVE, other groups are " m ore newcomers to sponsoring this about Ma event. Natashia Hill, an LSA King's go junior and member ,, of United Students ... for Christ, said her club became inter- ested in participat- ing in the symposium during Festifall. "We decided it would be good to see such unity on campus and since there are so few Christian events on campus, it .. a Supoporters of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's dream marched on Monday. I 9 would be a good opportunity to present that option for those wanting to partici- pate," Hill said The group sponsored a gospel mass and a dinner at People Care which non- members as tin Luther well as reg- Is and spirit b mem- $ h f5 ers united to reflect on the sermon. - Jeff Kosioreki "We were LSA senior so happy to see non- members attend because everyone got along so well and we were able to cherish fellowship," Hill said. Campus groups were not the only ones involved in the symposium: smaller orga- nizations played a part as well. The Council for Minority Advancement at Mosher-Jordan residence hall sponsored two films for Mosher-Jordan residents during the symposium. One film depicted King's life and another focused on Gandhi. "eople gained an understanding on how things have changed so much since his time," said Andrea Bediako, an LSA sophomore who attended the film screen- ings. "A lot of students reflected on footage of the video that really affected them, such as police brutality, and in the process, learned and exchanged ideas' Bediako said. Despite the low attendance, Bediako said the project was successful. "It's hard to get a response to care for such things because everyone is just really busy"she said. The multiplicity of symposium events indicates that King's legacy will not be for- gotten at the University -- and that stu- dent activism will continue to play a part in carrying on that legacy each year. Weekr Magi Music / If you thought it was bit out of the ordinary for The Verve to allow its sin- gle "Bittersweet Symphony" to sound- track a Nike shoe advertisment, you're not alone. The band members them- selves revealed that they would have never agreed to let their breakthrough single be used commercially. But since "Bittersweet Symphony" samples an orchestral bit from a previous Rolling Stones track, the band lost control of the song's publishing copyright to Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and former Stones manager Alan Keith. "The Verve's management licensed the use of 'Bittersweet Symphony' to Nike because of the company's consistent history of tasteful and creative advertising cam- paigns,' and also to prevent the song "from being utilized elsewhere without the band's knowledge or input, said The Verve in a written statement.
