Dr. Martin Iuther Kine. Jr. are constantly being put to the test, mem- bers of the university community annually band together to put the rev- erend's beliefs into action. The 11th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Symposiun, run by students and facul- tv at the Uni ersity provides education and hopes to change the way people live. It also offcrs several student orga- nizations the chance to organize for a cause. The Indian American Student Association was one of the many stu- dent groups that actively sponsored the symposturn. One of its contributions was a lecture entitled. "Parallel Visions of Dr. Martin Iuther King, Jr. and Gandhi." which explained the similar non-violent approaches used by each leader to promote awareness of civil rights and combat injustice. It's a great way for students and the University community to learn of the many inas i which Dr. King. modeled his nonviolent style after Gandhi-. said ISA senior Eic Amin. Project SERVE, a well-known cam- pus service organization, worked with the symposium coordinators to imple- ment a community service project called "Acting on the Dream," which united students and faculty interested in livin out King 's visions. V'lunteers painted walls, visited the elderly and entertained children at 27 sites in Ann Arbor.Ypsilanti and Detroit. Project SERVE has taken part in the symposium for the last four years.
