"The only other person that might qualify is Charles DeWildt in the pole vault. "Those guys won't (be trying to qualify) at Penn because they will be running the relays. But normally, they'll be running their same events each week for the next two or three weeks." 'M' LANDS THREE MORE PROSPECTS: The men's track and field team has received commit- ments from three more high school athletes, raising to four the number of prospects that have signed nation- track al letters of intent to compete at Michigan. The Wolverines filled holes in the sprints and jumps with sprinter Ike Okenwa and triple and long jumper Oded Padan. Derek Applewhite, a nationally- ranked sprinter and hurdler, signed his letter of intent during the early signing period. Distance runner Mark Pilja round- ed out the group of promising fresh- men-to-be. Michigan also hopes to receive some help from incoming freshman Justin Fargas, a highly-touted foot- ball recruit who is also the reigning California state champion in the 100-meter dash. Lisa Simes and the Wolverines were disappointed with their showing in LA.'s national championship meet, but the season was a successful one. Following a disastrous score of 47.675 on the beam, it was clear that the Wolverines would have to be near per- fect for the remainder of the event if they had any hopes of a respectable fin- ish. The team came together in its next three events and finished the day with .grace as all-American Nikki Peters 'cored a perfect 10 on the floor exer- cise. Michigan averaged nearly a 49.1 in its last three events - good enough for a second-place finish at the conference tournament. On the surface, the Wolverines' sec- ond-place finish at Big Tens appeared t be a disappointment, considering they were the reigning conference NETTERS Continued from Page 22 son. Iowa and Indiana also currently have four losses, and if the Hawkeyes finish the season with a record iden- tical to the Wolverines' mark, they will earn a higher seed again - due to their win over the Wolverines dur- ing the dual-meet season. Losing both of their weekend matches could drop the Wolverines out of the top five in the conference standings. Last year, the WOlverines won the Big Ten. They would then be forced to start the Big Ten Tournament a day early - something they are hoping to avoid. A split in their weekend matches would virtually assure the Wolverines a top-five seed, and a slot in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. Although nationals were an obvious disappointment, do not forget that Michigan did qualify - an accom- plishment only I 1 other teams in the nation can boast.
