I would suggest they hbve a very racist background." O'Brien said that affirmative action's goal of 4ttining a diverse campus is not a noble one. -LOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily - Thursday, November 20, 1997 - 7A "1 find it very superficial that we are concerned by how the University looks," O'Brien said. Audience members also joined in the argu- ment, including BAMN member Jessica Curtin, who challenged Jaye to "just say you are a racist and resegregationist." "You thought our generation wasn't capable of doing what generations before us were able to do," Curtin said. "Well, you were wrong. We will fight this. That was the worst mistake you ever made in your life." Jaye responded by calling Curtin and every defender of affirmative action "racist" and said the lawsuit against the University will cause the end of minority preferences. "We're going to haul their racist butts to jail," Jaye said. State Rep. Liz Brater (D-Ann Arbor), who sat in the audience, said the two-hour panel discus- sion was well organized and allowed people from all sides of the issue to speak their minds. "It's a topic for which people have strong feel- ings," Brater said. "The Women's Issues Commission did an excellent job moderating it. It's important to have an open discussion on the issue." LSA first-year student Sarah Ratkovich said she opposes affirmative action because alterna- tive means of achieving diversity already exist. "Diversity is extremely important, but creating diversity at the university level can be better achieved through improving K-12 education in the inner cities," Ratkovich said. Last night's symposium was the third in a four- day series of educational forums on affirmative action. The panel discussion was organized by the Michigan Student Assembly's Women's Issues Commission and Minority Affairs Commission. - Dailv Staff Reporter Katie Plona contributed to this report. a t Group fighting new anti-discrimination -law in Ypsilanti 46.50+/hr. conpoter fwu atinosp PAID PR INTERNSHIP Winter 98. DETROIT (AP) - Ypsilanti is one step closer to having a law prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orienta- tion, but a local group is vowing to fight the measure. The Ypsilanti City Council gave unan- imous tentative approval to an anti-dis- crimination ordinance on Tuesday night. In part, it stipulates protecting everyone regardless of "race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, having a disability, familial status, education- al association, source of income, height or weight." But the group Citizens Opposing Special Treatment (COST) wants voters to pass an amendment to the city charter that would nullify the ordinance, which is expected to become law following a final City Council vote Dec. 16. "From the very beginning, we have stated our objections to any ordinance that elevates a group to protect them based on sexual desires, sexual drives and/or sexual conduct," COST member Judy Bloss said "Homosexuality is a morally contro- versial issue. Race is not a morally con- troversial issue. You are born what you are born," Bloss said. Councilperson S.A. Trudy Swanson, who helped draft the ordinance, said the law does not mean to single out any group. "We're not asking anybody to denounce the Bible. We're asking people to think about what if that were you. I'm African-American. Being black, we already know about discrimination," Swanson said. "My view is discrimination is dis- crimination, regardless person's sexual orientation or what they believe in." The ordinance came about after an Ypsilanti printing company refused to print raffle tickets last February for Tri- Pride, a group of "gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered" social work students at Eastern Michigan University.
