Cotsonika Daily Sports Editor Jon Jansen and David Bowens, stand- out football players at Michigan, may provide much-needed depth for the men's basketball team next semester. Tai Streets, meanwhile, may not play basket- ball after the bowl game as he did last season. During a media event yesterday at Criser Arena, men's basketball coach Brian Ellerbe said he "could not be sure" any of them will play but that depth is his "greatest concern" for the upcoming sea- son, which begins next week. "We'll have to evaluate them and see what they can do, but if they can play, they might be able to help us," Ellerbe said. "Where they would probably help us the most is practice. A couple of big bodies like that could do a lot to get us ready for Big Ten games. "But we really won't know anything for certain until football season ends." Jansen is an offensive lineman and team captain in football; Streets is a wide receiver. Bowens, who sat with the coaches at men's basketball walk-on try- outs last Monday, played linebacker and defensive end for two seasons before he was dismissed from the football team this past spring for subpar academic perfor- mance. He is enrolled in extension cours- es and said he expects to be eligible for basketball in January and football next fall. Men's basketball co-captain Travis Conlan said Streets, who played some spare minutes as a reserve guard last bas- ketball season, likely will decide in January whether he will play basketball again. Streets could not be reached for comment. Ellerbe and Conlan also dismissed the possibility that All-America cornerback Charles Woodson would play basketball. Woodson's Jordan-esque leaping ability enables him to make spectacular inter- ceptions on the football field and acro- batic dunks on the playground. But he "can't dribble or shoot," Conlan joked. Jansen and Bowens were outstanding prep basketball players, receiving schol- arship offers in both basketball and foot- ball. While at Clawson High School, Jansen even played against Conlan, then at St. Clair Shores Lake Shore. "All I remember is that he was a big force inside," Conlan said. Playing college basketball, however, would be a challenge. Not only would they have to sharpen their stale skills to perform in the Big Ten, Ellerbe said, they would have to straighten out their person- al situations. Since Jansen is on a football scholar- ship, he would have to clear plans with football coach Lloyd Carr. Neither Jansen nor Carr could be reached for comment last night, but both said Monday that the subject will not be dis- cussed until the football season con- cludes. There is no doubt, however, that the basketball bug came back to Jansen this summer. A three-week break in early August between offseason weightlifting and two-a-days gave Jansen the chance to work out with the basketball team. Conlan said the 6-foot-7, 300-pound Jansen was "able to keep up with" 6-foot- 8, 300-pound center Robert Traylor "just fine" in unsupervised pickup games at Crisler. "But because Jon's the captain of the football team, I don't even know if coach Carr would let him play basketball," Conlan said. Potentially, Jansen has a lot to lose. An injury could be incredibly costly. "Hey, the guy's going to be a high NFL draft pick," said Ellerbe, who also said he had not spoken to Jansen directly. "I'm sure he's going to want to take his time and figure out what's best for him and everyone involved.: Bowens, the school's single-season sack record holder, would have to face larger obstacles than Jansen. His academ- ic troubles, he said, were caused by poor time management and the emotional tur- moil that followed the shooting of a close friend. Bowens, who would not identify the friend, said he spent much of his free time with the friend at the hospital as his grades dropped. After Bowens was declared ineligible for spring practice, Carr helped him transfer during the summer to Eastern Kentucky, where Bowens said he would have prepared for an NFL career. But he was able to get out of the deal. "I was mad at myself," Bowens said. "I took advantage of being a student-athlete by neglecting the academic resources available to me that the school was pro- viding. I committed to Eastern Kentucky, but when I came back (to Ann Arbor), I changed my mind." Intervention by several of his team- mates - including Woodson and former Orchard Lake St. Mary's teammate DiAllo Johnson, who is a defensive back at Michigan - convinced him to make a comeback. Woodson, Johnson and other players have worn Bowens's old No. 6 on their wristbands this season as a show of support. "We care about him, and we want him to know that," Woodson said earlier this year. Bowens is living in an Ypsilanti apart- ment, working full-time to support him- self. With no football scholarship, he has had to pay for school himself. "It's really difficult," Bowens said. "I've realized the opportunities that I had' and I'm still a die-hard Michigan man. I want another chance. "(To) everyone who was a fan of David Bowens, I want to say I'm sorry for letting them down. But I have prob- lems of my own. I let myself down, Coach Carr and everyone who represent- ed me. I wasn't a student-athlete; I was an athlete. And that's going to change. "I'm going to be eligible, and basket- ball is going to happen." (IL 0*from...
