The world of college basketball is
not entirely pleased with the
University of Michigan right now.
Athletic Director Tom Goss started a
chain reaction of commotion and
annoyance throughout college athletic
and media-relation departments when
he fired coach Steve Fisher last
Saturday and announced he would
immediately embark on a national
search for a successor, just days before
most teams start practice.
Goss, who said he hopes to name a
replacement by Wednesday at the ear-
liest and Friday at the latest, said he
has talked to 22 to 25 coaches since
Sunday. Goss also said he has nar-
rowed his list of candidates to about
eight.
While it is not required by the
NCAA, Goss has been asking coach-
es' athletic directors for permission
before speaking to potential candi-
dates. Goss said he is doing so out of
courtesy.
Some of those athletic directors
have been tcss than accomodating.
"Goss called and was not given per-

of opportunity of 45 days after the end
of the season when other schools can
talk to him.
"If (Michigan) wants to hire an
interim coach and then talk to our guy
after the season, that's fine. But not
now, a few days before practice."
Providence Athletic Director John
Marinatto also reportedly denied per-
mission when Goss called about coach
Pete Gillen.
And as quickly as Goss comes call-
ing, so does the media, hungry to find
out who might be on Goss's list.
Even before last Saturday's
announcement of Fisher's dismissal,
speculation engulfed the campus of
California that coach Ben Braun was
already in Ann Arbor, ready to take
over the Michigan program.
But it wasn't until Tuesday, Goss
said, that he had his first conversation
with Braun. Just hours afterward, Cal
locked up Braun through the year 2004
with a two-year contract extension and
a salary increase.
As for who the other candidates
might be, the only additional one Goss
has confirmed is former Bdrigham
Young coach Roger Reid.
Goss said he might have been able
to reveal more of the candidates if the
timing was different.

"In some cases, one of the reasons
they decline is because of the status of
people knowing that they were talk-
ing," Goss said. "It's so different with
the closeness of the season."
As the Wolverines prepare to start
practice today under the guidance of
assistant coach Brian Ellerbe, Goss is
off to meet face-to-face with candi-
dates.
Thursday, he interviewed former
Michigan basketball great Cazzie
Russell in Ann Arbor before leaving
town to conduct more intersviews.
Goss said he will return today and
may conduct more interviews during
the first part of next week.
Russell is now a second-year coach
at Savannah College of Art and
Design. Russell's Bees went 16-9 in
his first season and finished with a No.
7 ranking in the NCAA Division Ill
southern region polls.
Reid's Cougars made the NCAA
tournament five times during his
tenure and finished first in the Western
Athletic Conference three times.
Other names circulating in the
media include Oklahoma's Kelvin
Sampson, Tulane's Perry Clark,
Illinois State's Kevin Stallings,
Bradley's Jim Molinari and ILeonard
Hamilton from Miami (Fla.).
