Field position could be vitally important, even though Fry is down on his de fense. "We'd have a hard time stopping somebody in pregame warmups," Fry said, even though the Ilawkeyes are ranked third in the Big Ten in total defense. "That's no lie." No matter, though. The focus of this game will be on Michigan's defense and Iowa's offense. The win- ner of that battle likely will win the war. Carr said earlier this week that the Wolverines "'don't hayve a lot of time to get ready for a team that I think is the best team that we've played this year. "Offensively, Hayden does more tricks than most guys. It's a very dif- ficult thing to be sound against every play, and we're going to have to be at our best." NICHOLAS J. But then the first real test came two weeks ago when the Hawkeyes traveled to Columbus to take on then-undefeated Ohio State. The Buckeyes dismantled the Hawkeyes, 23-7, courtesy of a stifling defense led by linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer. .The ;Buckeyes shut down the wkeyes' offense, arguably the Mckbone of their team, and their star running back Tavian Banks. Banks, the nation's rushing leader with 919 yards and an 8.1 average per carry, was held to just 84 yards on 22 car- ries two weeks ago. The Hawkeyes had last week off to repuperate and prepare for tomor- row's game against Michigan at Michigan Stadium. "We certainly needed the week ," Iowa coach Hayden Fry said. "Ohio State shut us down as well as we've been shut down in a long while." A clash between Banks and the rest of the Hawkeyes' offense and Miphi an's defense, ranked second in the-nation, seems inevitable this weekend and should make for a hard- fought battle. "We don't have a lot of time to get ady for a team that I think is the best team that we've played this year," Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said. And with that said, here is how the two teams match up against each other: MICHIGAN RUSHING OFFENSE VS. IOWA RUSHING DEFENSE: The Wolverines have sputtered offensively in their first five outings, epecially on the ground. Last week *ainst Northwestern, the Wolverines managed 141 yards on the ground, but tailback Chris Howard was the only Wolverine to rush for more than 20 yards. The Hawkeyes are continuing to deal with the loss of linebacker Vernon.Rollins, who has been out for the last three weeks. But he has been replaced by Raj Clark, who has recorded 13 tackles in the last two ames.d Iowa- defensive tackle Jared DeVries's 266 yards in tackles for loss surpassed the Iowa career record of 241. For his efforts, he has been selected one of 12 semi-finalists for the Lombardi Award. Michigan's ground game has been unpredictable and the weak link in its overall game. Iowa's defense probably won't help matters tomor- w. IDGE: Iowa Jerame Tuman, who had gone widely unused the past three weeks before the Northwestern game. Opposing defenses just don't feel the need to cover him, and he has proven that he can make the big play when he needs to. If Iowa can keep the Wolverines' ground game at bay, Griese will have to throw a little more. He'll keep the passes short, and as long as Tuman and receivers Tai Streets and Russell Shaw can get open, the Wolverines should have no problem in the air. EDGE: Michigan go against Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson. His wish may come true, especially if Michigan neutralizes Iowa's ground game, In that case, Sherman may have to go deep with Dwight more so than usual. Dwight has five touchdown recep- tions for 441 yards, leading all Iowa receivers, and has benefitted from having Sherman in the pocket. Sherman is ranked 10th in the nation with pass efficiency rating of 156.3 and has a big arm that can get the ball down field. He can throw deep, having passed for 993 yards and 1I touchdowns. The problem is that Michigan's secondary is the fourth-best in the country. Maybe Dwight should rethink looking for- ward to going up against Woodson. MICHIGAN RUSHING DEFENSE: Iowa's strength is its offense, which starts with Banks, who is 81 yards shy of 1,000 this season. He currently leads the Big Ten in rush- ing (183.8 yards), scoring (15.6) and all-purpose yards (190.2), and ranks sixth in total offense nationally (183.8). Banks, essentially, is the Iowa backfield. Every other offensive back has rushed for less than 200 yards and only Rob Thein has rushed for more than 100 yards (164). But the Hawkeyes have one of the nation's best quarterbacks in Matt Sherman, who has managed to set up a variety of rush plays that have thrown off opposing defenses "Iowa is a big play team. They have a lot of weapons offensively," Carr said. "In almost all of their weapons, they have the ability to go the distance." But the one thing standing in the way of Banks running havoc on the ground is Michigan's rush defense, which has stuffed opposing banks around the line of scrimmage and up the sidelines consistently this season. The Wolverines are ranked fifth in the nation in rush defense (68.2). Two weeks ago against the Buckeyes, the Hawkeyes had prob- lems against Katzenmoyer, who is the centerpiece of the Buckeyes' defense. Unfortunately, the Wolverines have more than one weapon, starting on the line and fil- tering down to the linebackers. EDGE: Michigan ,qq I'D" pp, SPECIAL TEAMS: Iowa and Michigan's punting units are relatively equal. Iowa punter Jason Baker is averaging 39.8 yards per punt and Michigan's Jason Vinson is averaging 40.9. Michigan's field-goal tandem of Jay Feely and Kraig Baker have settled in and become more consistent. Iowa gets the edge in punt returns. Dwight led the Big Ten in punt returns as a freshman and junior and was second in the nation as a sopho- more. But this year, teammate Tony Collins is the top punt returner, aver- aging 24 yards per return. The Hawkeyes' suffer in kickoff returns - they are ranked 10th in the con- ference (17.7) - but Michigan has- n't taken the world by storm in either category. Whether or not the extra week has any effect on this game remains to be seen, but the game should undoubtedly prove to be a good battle, The game should come down to Iowa's offense and Michigan's defense. After the game against Ohio State, the Hawkeyes are looking to prove that they can perform against top caliber teams and the Wolverines are fighting to prove that they can keep up their intensity.
