The Michigan Daily - Monday, October 13, 1997 -7A VSHER inued from Page IA what our record was last year," Goss said. "That's not what's Important. That's not what's important with me. Winning is an output of the things we do, of the values we have." Goss said all athletic programs must move in the direction of several core values, including: Honesty and integrity 0 Accountability and responsibility Respect and compassion r Competitive spirit A commitment to "the team spirit" Goss also voiced a concern with graduation rates within the basketball program. Fisher's dismissal was Goss's first major decision as ath- letic director. Goss, who stepped into the post Sept. 8, has repeatedly stressed the importance of accountability within the department. "It's not going to be a popular decision;' Goss said. "You have to go with, sometimes, the tougher decision. This is the tougher decision of the two. "Very easily I could have gone in there and dealt with the iia and said, 'Here's all the reasons why we're going to k ep Coach Fisher,"' he said. w Former Michigan player Maurice Taylor, who was at the center of much recent controversy and left school earlier this year with one year of eligibility remaining, expressed his dis- appointment with the decision. "He was a player's coach and everyone got along with him real well," said Taylor, who currently plays for the Clippers. "He was there through the good and the bad times. He was more like a father figure to some of the guys who didn't have fathers." Fisher's departure may close the book on a tumultuous two years within the program. Following the University's announcement that the team committed two NCAA viola- tions through contact with Detroit booster Ed Martin, numer- ous allegations of serious impropriety within the program fil- tered into the media. In response to the allegations, the University hired a private law firm, which investigated the program for seven months and found no evidence of major violations within the pro- gram. It found instead that three minor violations had been incurred through contact with Martin. Also, on five occa- sions, Fisher inscribed former coach Perry Watson's initials on complimentary ticket orders for Martin. Fisher said he did not remember the incidences. In accordance with a clause in Fisher's contract, the University will pay Fisher until his contract expires in August 2000. Fisher's salary for the 1997-98 season was listed at around $134,000. Fisher's 8-year record was 184-82. - The Associated Press contributed to this report. Mc 'COACHi Continued from Page IA simply said, "because I wanted Brian Ellerbe." NEllerbe's head-coaching experience y have been one deciding factor in Goss's temporary choice. "I like his interchange with people. I like the way he relates to kids,"he said. Goss, who was hired just more than two months ago, said he will use sever- al resources to help narrow his search, including the advice of Big Ten offi- cials and nationally respected coaches. "I will use a variety of resources," oiss said. "(Big Ten) Commissioner Delaney has a variety of under- ding of who's where across the country. "Then I'll try to contact some of the senior coaches that might exist, assum- ing they might have some input on peo- ple they respect and like ... people like (Duke University head coach) Mike Krzyzewski and (Indiana University coach) Bobby Knight." Braun took over Cal's program before last season under circumstances similar to the current situation at the University. He replaced Todd Bozeman, who was forced to resign after admit- ting to paying $30,000 to the family of an athlete, a flagrant NCAA violation. The NCAA placed the team on proba- tion this past July. Braun, after leading the Bears to a 23-9 record, a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament and taking Pacific-10 Coach-of-the-Year honors last season, agreed to a five-year con- tract extension with California this past August. At EMU, Braun garnered three Mid- American Conference Coach of the Year awards. His teams made the NCAA tournament three times, includ- ing the 1995-96 squad that upset Duke in the Midwest Regionals of the NCAA tournament. Other candidates Goss may be look- ing at include Kelvin Sampson of the University of Oklahoma, Phil Ford of the University of North Carolina, Pete Gillen of Providence University, Ray McCallum of Ball State University, Tim Floyd of Iowa State University, Ricardo Patton of the University of Colorado and Gary Williams of the University of Maryland. .. _ _ __ __ A CAREER OF CHOICE.
