Caffeine - our best friend when our bodies need sleep and we want to stay awake. Caffeine is a plant product that is most commonly found in coffee, tea and soft drinks. According to University Health Services, its effects can begin as soon as 15 minutes after consumption and can last up to six hours. A UHS informational booklet noted that physiologically, caffeine increases body temperature and blood pressure, among other things. This translates into an artificial alertness due to the stimula- tion of the nervous system. Thoughts flow more easily and read- ily, attention span and motor activity increase, and fatigue and drowsiness decrease. "I've discovered that during exam periods those caffeinated coffees are very valuable in keeping my eyes open," first-year Engineering student Nicole Felpdpausch said. Taken in excess (more than 200-300 milligrams per day), caffeine can cause unwanted side-effects such as insomnia. "Every individual is different, and the way in which caffeine effects some- one varies from person to person," said UHS dietician Marilyn Nakamato. James Boynton, an LSA senior, said, "I think I'm in denial about my need for that 'hopped-up feeling' that caffeine gives you. I always have a hot cup ofjoe in the morning, but if I'm going to have a long night, I justeat Rice Krispies treats or Pixy Stix - that usually keeps me going:' When used in moderation, caffeine can be a great study aid, but then again, nothing beats a good night's sleep.
