the Wolverines reeling and forced to
reevaluate their position in the Big Ten
race.
With three games remaining for each
of the the three teams in contention,
Michigan must now play catch-up if it
wants to have a chance to win the regu-
lar-season title.
Entering this weekend ranked 11th in
the nation, Michigan's first stop in the
trip was a clash with No. 19 Minnesota.
Down 2-0 late in the first half, the
Wolverines battled back to knot the score
at 2-2 on the strength of goals from
Karen Montgomery and Kacy Beitel.
After a third Minnesota goal,
Michigan midfielder Emily Schmitt
forced overtime with her fourth goal of

the season, which came with just nine
minutes remaining in the match.
Despite numerous opportunities to
score in the first overtime frame, both
sides were unable to capitalize.
In the second stanza, both teams bat-
tled just as fiercely in a match that
appeared as if it would end in a stale-
mate.
Then, with less than six minutes
remaining, Minnesota forward Nicole
Lee took a pass on the right wing and
beat Michigan goalkeeper Jessica Jones
to her left side, sealing the 4-3 victory
for the ecstatic Gophers (5-0, 9-1-1).
Things would get no easier for the
Wolverines, as they attempted to bounce
back against No. 23 Penn State (5-0-1, 9-
2-1) in State College.
Coming off a victory Friday against
Michigan State, Penn State was also
undefeated in Big Ten play.
The Nittany Lions played as if they
intended to stay that way. Michigan and
Penn State battled through two scoreless
halves, highlighted by stellar defense on
both sides.
The Nittany Lions took only nine
shots in the first 90 minutes, while the
Wolverines squeezed off 13 attempts.
Similar to their previous match with
Minnesota, the overtime frame offered
many scoring chances, mostly for the
Wolverines.
The second overtime followed suit,
with Michigan assuming the role of
aggressor.
The Wolverines launched a total of 13
shots during both extra frames, while the
Nittany Lions offered up a mere four.
But in the end, the goalkeeping on
both sides was simply too much, and the
Wolverines' second-straight double over-
time game ended in a draw.
Penn State goalie Dana Christante tal-
lied 13 saves on the day, while Michigan
freshman Carissa Stewart stopped eight,
earning her second career shutout.
