WARREN ZINN/Daily
Indiana quarterback Jay Rodgers had trouble escaping the wrath of the Michigan defense all game Saturday. Here, nose tackle Rob Renes (58) gets the Hoosiers' signal-
caller in his grasp for the first sack of his collegiate career. Michigan racked up four sacks, a season-high, while holding Rodgers to just 115 yards in the air.

BLOOMINGTON - A similar thing
happened against Colorado.
Michigan quarterback Brian Griese
and tight end Jerame Tuman ran the play-
action across the middle of the field that
burned the Buffaloes' defense, which
couldn't adjust, four times.
Indiana's defense also couldn't adjust
to another play that the Wolverines ran
over and over again this weekend - a
swing pass to the flat.
It seems that the Wolverines have a
thing for running the same play over and
over again, especially when opposing
defenses can't adjust to and stop it.
This weekend, with the running game
struggling at times, Griese injected a lit-
tle life into the ground attack with the
swing play to the right or left flat.
Indiana, a man-to-man coverage team,
tried to pressure Griese in the pocket. But
that in turn usually left the sidelines open
and vulnerable to the run.
The swing play went a little like this:
Griese would stand in the pocket as
Indiana's linebackers moved in on the
line of scrimmage and their secondary
players stayed with the receivers. Griese
then flipped the ball to a Michigan back
in the right or left flat. As Indiana's
defensive players dropped in on the line,
the back raced out of the backfield,
around the corner and up the sideline.
And it was usually successful for two
reasons: For one, Indiana's defenders had
trouble recovering from dropping in on
the line of scrimmage and on Griese.
Secondly, the linebackers were too slow
for the backs as they raced up the side.
The result was usually a big gain.
"They played a lot of man coverage,"

Griese said. "Any time you play man
coverage, you have defensive backs on
wide receivers, but you also have line-
backers on running backs and we liked
that matchup today. A lot of our running
backs will be successful if they are one
on one with a linebacker."
Toward the end of the first quarter,
with the Wolverines facing a third-and-
five situation on the Indiana 44-yard line,
Griese ran the play to the left flat for tail-
back Chris Howard and a 12-yard gain.
Four plays later, Howard rushed for a
three-yard touchdown, which put the
Wolverines up, 10-0.
On the Wolverines' next drive, Griese
ran the play twice in four downs. On a
first and 10 from the Indiana 45, Griese
flipped the ball to Howard for a 10-yard
gain. Three plays later, facing a third and
six, Griese hit Howard again for an eight-
yard run and the first down.
The end result was a touchdown pass
to wide receiver Tai Streets and a 17-0
Michigan lead.
"Their defense overpursues a lot," full-
back Chris Floyd said of the Hoosiers.
"They go with fakes and put a lot of pres-
sure on the quarterback. In the process of
putting the pressure on, the back can
sneak out and get wide open, and we hit
that play for some big yards."
Indiana continued to play man-to-man
coverage and never adjusted to the play
-- in much the same way that Colorado
never adjusted to the play action four
weeks ago - so the Wolverines stuck
with the play throughout the game.
. "We did a good job of getting guys
open," Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said.
"I thought Brian did a good job dumping
the ball to the backs, which is a big part
of our offense."
up 31-0 with two minutes left in the half.
Both drives were set tip by the
defense, forcing the Hoosiers to turn
the ball over. The first came when
Dhani Jones and James Hall stuffed
Indiana's De'Wayne Hogan on a
fourth and one from the Indiana 41-
yard line, and the second when
Charles Woodson picked off a Jay
Rodgers pass at the Indiana 14.
Even when Indiana wasn't turning
the ball over to Michigan, the
Wolverines' defense smothered the

Michigan linebacker Dhani Jones had the best game of his Michigan career, regis-
tering a team-high nine tackles, including six solo, against Indiana. The Wolverines
have had a different player lead the team in tackles in each game this season.
