No game has been more fun to watch or participate in, and few have been more evenly matched. The game became the last of the season for both teams in 1935, and since 1922, more than 6.2 million fans have attended its 75 editions. Nine times one of the teams had a perfect season ruined. Seventeen times jhe teams decided the Big Ten title between themselves. "Anytime you beat Ohio State," Michigan coach Lloyd Carn said, "it's big." And Carr's counterpart, John Cooper, couldn't agree more. He has been on of the most successful coaches in the game for the past decade, yet his 1-7-1 record against Michigan haunts him constantly. "All anyone asks me is, 'Coach, are we going to beat Michigan this year?"' Cooper said. The only rivalry that can compare is Michigan-Michigan State, one between two teams composed of players who grew up playing against and with one another. Players are lining up against friends and, sometimes, brothers. More than 5.4 million have witnessed its 73 editions. In fact, Michigan boasts two more of the top seven :highest-attended rivalries (Minnesota and Illinois). Southern Cal, Michigan's favorite Rose Bowl rival, is involved in the other three (with UCLA,, Notre Dame and Stanford).:The fact that; the Wolverines and Trojans have large stadiums cannot be forgotten, but nei- ther can the success that made stadiums of such size practical and even neces- sary. Success is the key to any rivalry. Pressure and time help. Personalities do, too. But success, a tradition of it, makes a rival the most. Penn State, which Michigan has played just four times, is quickly becoming a bitter and worthy foe. Across the field on those Saturdays when they play the Nittany Lions, the Wolverines look up and see many of the same things, they will see this .Saturday. against Notre Dame and later against Northwestern, Michigan. State, Minnesota and Ohio State. Long lega-, cies. Tradition and passion. A piece of themselves that tells them who they are. God, is there anything better?
