Mich. 8:15 p.m. MUSIC David Bowie Ziggy Stardust has emerged into classy elder rock statesman. State Theatre, Detroit. 961-5450. By Sarah M.Ag For the Daily Connections. Networking. Contacts. The importance of these three words becomes glaringly apparent as students graduate and head into the "real world" in search of jobs. Does the Greek sys- tem provide these vital "contacts" for alumni once they graduate? Most agree that it can't hurt to add a fraternity or sorority name to a resume. "Once you join a Greek organization, you're joining it for life," said John Mountz, adviser of the Interfraternity Council on campus. This lifetime mem- bership can be valuable while looking for career advice or career positions, often providing someone to contact who can help. Although connections vary from group to group, Greek alum- ni can feel sure that almost anywhere they go, there will be someone affiliat- ed with their sorority or fraternity's chapter. Today, undergraduates in fraternities and sororities have the opportunity to meet many alumni members of their groups working in various career fields. This is excellent for "career network- ing;' added Jeff Schoenherr, a 1991 LSA graduate and an alumni regent for Delta Chi, especially today, when stu- dents are thinking of careers earlier in their college life. LSA sophomore Adam Pence, a member of Kappa Sigma, added that simply belonging to a fraternity can help career-wise even if graduates don't talk to people necessarily connected with their former fraternity or sorority. "I guess if you're talking to someone (for a job) in the same chapter it proba- bly scores you some points, but there is a kind of connection between (members of) the Greek system anywhere," Pence said. Most fraternities and sororities keep in touch with their alumni via newslet- ters and social get-togethers. Such ser- vices provide a social support system that is also useful after graduation. Greek organizations often have region- al groups that help keep a social associ- ation with former members. Margie Miller, a 1989 LSA graduate and alumna of Chi Omega, said that her experience with the Greek system was extremely beneficial to her social life even after her college years. "It provid- ed a social connection for me - when I moved to Seattle to work for Microsoft, I contacted one of my soror- ity sisters there and was introduced to all her friends," Miller said. Miller added that it helped her feel a sense of belonging in a place new to her. Greek life certainly has its advan- tages - even after the four years of brotherhood or sisterhood are over. terpiece set during World War II.
