Once each year on a summer Saturday, Berlin, a city of 3.5 million people, plays
host to Europe's biggest music parade. This year 1,000,000 ravers flocked to the
Love Parade, a techno-music street parade in downtown Berlin -not bad for a
festival that started just eight years ago, in 1989, with a modest crowd of only
300 ravers.
From 2 p.m. until sundown, 30 trucks each modified to carry a crowd of sev-
eral dozen dancers, DJs and loudspeakers bellowing techno tunes - drive at a
snail's pace through the city. Accompanying them on foot were hundreds of
thousands of European teens high on life and music, not to mention the occa-
sional German beer. When the sun finally set on their parade, the ravers simply
moved indoors to Berlin's variety of clubs, dance halls and private parties.
