S Thursday September 11, 1997 iolland days: Multi-facetedaactor, singer, rapper Sean Holland proves he's far more than just 'Clueless'P By Julia Shih Daily Film Editor Back before Will Smith was fighting intergalactic crime as a studly man in black, he was a fresh kid in funky clothes, kicking it in the ritzy town of Bel Air. For all fans who remember Smith from way back when, the career of UPN's "Clueless" star Sean Holland may seem oddly familiar. Holland is currently best recognized as the fresh kid in funky clothes kicking it with Cher and the gang in absurdly affluent Beverly Hills. A talented enter- tainer who threatens to take Hollywood by storm, the easy-going and modest young actor admits that he wouldn't mind seeing his career blossom like Smith's. "I always say this and people are probably going to think I'm crazy, but I'd love to have a Will Smith-type career (and) go straight from TV to feature films," Holland told The Michigan Daily. "I mean, I want to do things pos- itive - family, kids, comedy type of movies. I don't want to get caught up into the serious murder-type and all that." For real-life nice-guy Holland who plays Murray's best friend Sean on the show, it looks like his career is aiming towards the same gold-bricked path. While Holland's acting background consists of a brief history in theater and guest spots on the television shows "Sister, Sister" and "The Parent 'Hood," he is no rookie to the entertainment industry. "I've been rapping for a while. I put out a CD through a label called A Street Records, which is a subsidiary of Avenue Records, called, 'Tales From the Crib."' His latest musical venture is a jazz album under the name Bare Bones on the label Monster Music, titled "For the Mind, Body and Soul." He has also worked with a variety of popular music groups, whether performing as the frontman, or working back-up. "I've rapped on different remix ver- sions for Tom Jones,' said Holland. "I even did a little bit of Spanish rap on this singer's album, Angelica. I've toured all over the place doing the rap thing because that's initially what I wanted to do career-wise. But it's great now doing 'Clueless.' I get to do a little bit of both - I get to rap on the show as well as act" Similarly, superstar Will Smith also went from being a popular rap artist to the star of a hit sitcom. But while "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" was set around Smith, Holland had to do a little bit more work to secure his spot on televi- sion. Holland's acting career was launched by what at first seemed like a disap- pointing experience. Holland had origi- nally auditioned for a part in a movie titled "No Worries" from 20th Century Fox. Holland explained, "I initially went out for the role of Murray. What hap- pened was, long story short, 20th Century dropped the project, Paramount picked the project back up. Unfortunately, I wanted to go back in for the audition but the woman who was casting for it didn't think I was right for the part, and hired someone else for it. But later on down the line, I get a call out of nowhere saying, 'We just want to hire you for the part of Murray's friend. You don't have to audition, you don't have to do anything. The part is yours if you want it.' "So I ended up getting two days on the job, plus getting one of my songs that was on my album at the time into the movie as well:" The film was later renamed "Clueless,' and the rest is teen cult- movie history. As for the beginnings of "Clueless," the television series, the show recycles not only outlandish wardrobes, hip slang and the unparalleled attitude, but many of the actors from the film as well. Also playing their same respective roles in the show are Stacey Dash as Cher's best friend Dionne, Donald Adeosun Faison as Dionne's boyfriend Murray and Elisa Donovan as Cher's rival Amber. To Holland, starting the show was a lot easier with so many familiar faces returning. "I think it helped a lot because everybody (had) built a friend- ship. Especially, I only had like one scene in the movie, but I got to really meet everybody and we got to spend a lot of time together the two days that I was there. So I think it helps a lot, everybody knowing each other already." Holland continued, "It was almost like doing a sequel pretty much, but it was a little bit easier." In it's second season (it spent it's first on ABC's Friday night line-up), "Clueless" promises to provide some quality entertainment in the upcoming months. Though the show is still in pro- duction and not set to premiere until Sept. 23, it is already apparent that the producers are preparing an onslaught of fun for its audience. "One of my favorite (episode premis- es) so far, is my character, Sean, decides that he's finally found something he likes to do, which is science. I enter into a science competition and I decide I'm too smart to hang out with Murray any- more ... I want to hang out with the sci- ence nerds" Holland continued, "There's also a back-to-school episode where we say what we all did over the summer. And here again, I get to do a little rap thing where, over the summer I put out a rap CD and I'm selling them out of my locker at school." Holland admitted that playing Sean is no problem, as he basically gets to be himself when the cameras are rolling. Sean Holland and on-screen best fiend Donald Adeosun Faison are the macks. "Sean is my real name and it's my real character, so it pretty much is me - outgoing, a people-pleaser trying to please everybody; just a happy guy who likes to make people laugh" Holland wasn't kidding when he said that he tries to please everybody. The likable actor is intent on doing films that will expose his charming talent to people of all ages. "I want everybody to be able to come see my movies," said Holland. "People that do (more mature-audience type movies), that's great for them. But I would prefer to do the Sinbad-type of comedy where the whole family could come see it and enjoy it. Like I could take my movie to church and pop it in the VCR. Like if I can't put my movie in for my church, then I probably don't need to be doing it:' For the time being, his church and every other congregation in the nation can catch this rising star on television every Tuesday starting Sept. 23 on UPN. While Will Smith may currently be a household name, with Holland's talents and amiable attitude, it won't be long before aspiring young actors start dreaming of being the next Sean Holland. With the current dismal state of the entertainment industry, the world definitely needs more pleasant and gift-, ed performers like Sean. Its-not unusual: Former Tom Jones back-up rapper Sean Holland now stars as Sean in "Clueless," now airing Tuesdays on the UPN network. ABC?As if! The show also imprinted a cryptic language on impressionable young minds that has caused middle school teachers more confusion than the advent of Ebonics. Though Alicia Silverstone opted to continue her reign as teen queen in motion pictures, most of the cast from the film returns in the show. The familiar faces make it much easier for audiences to make the transition from the film to the television program. Silverstone's replacement, Rachel Blanchard, looks much like the Cher we remember when she is all decked out in her outrageous (yet perfectly matched) outfits. Blanchard, a Toronto native, was previously seen in the Nickelodeon series, "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" and starred with Louis Gossett, Jr. in "Iron Eagle IV" Stacey Dash as Dionne and Donald Adeosun Faison as Murray make up the couple that everyone at the high school wants to be a part of. Sean Holland plays Murray's best friend and Elisa Donovan also returns as Cher's fashion rival, Amber. This season, everyone is now a junior in high school, with both new and old problems. The cast will be attempting to tackle the SATs, problems with the opposite sex, friendship, grades, par- ents and contemplating their future. Some upcoming storylines include Cher and Dionne discussing the possibil- ity of Cher dating a sexy singer and Murray and Sean becoming entrepre- neurs. While "Clueless" definitely isn't a show that will amuse every viewer, most people who immensely appreciated the movie will also enjoy the series. "Clueless" the N series stars Elisa Donovan as the villainous Amber; Rachel Blanchard as ring leader Cher; and Stacey Dash as sassy Dionne.
